Posted By: leon
Hey Folks
I have just spoken to Brian McQueen and have emailed Dan B and Matt W about looking at different hosting sites for Net54. With all of the issues that are going on, and the lack of interest of Net54 to do anything in the way of upgrades, I feel it might be time to go to a different host. I posted 2-3 questions in the last few weeks, on the technical forum for Net54, and no responses were given. I truly feel we can do better than this s/w. At the end of the day it's the participants that make the community. We have had this discussion before but its been a while and we have more issues today than we did before. This won't be a short process if we decide to change so it's not like anything will happen overnight. My main concern is porting over the information we have debated for the last 8yrs. I doubt we would go to a platform where the information couldn't be taken with us. Thoughts on this and potential new forum hosts? If we do change we will do a redirect and make sure EVERYONE is able to find us FROM THIS SITE. This change would potentially take care of the AOL issue, of members being blocked for no reason, and the other issues we have had and are having. best regards

Posted By: barrysloate
The site went down just as I was about to respond to this.

I am by no means the most computer savvy guy on this site (probably right near the bottom), but even I recognize the software is old and needs upgrading. Many have complained about the edit function and the constant server error messages we get, so maybe it's time to make a change.

Posted By: leon
I had posted this thread before we had the last glitch. It's not the fact that we have gone down a few times in the last few years as I am not sure that would be reason enough to move. I get weekly emails from members that are great guys that have been inadvertently blocked as they are AOL users...plus our functionality sucks, imo. Brian and I will be talking more this evening or tomorrow about it. All thoughts are welcomed.....

Posted By: Bill Cornell
I doubt we would go to a platform where the information couldn't be taken with us.

Leon -

Throwing in my 2 cents here. Unfortunately, as I learned from my brief and bad experience with N54, it would be a non-trivial project to bring over the data from the site without their cooperation, on the order of a few hundred hours from technical folks. Trying to be practical from my experience. Trae or Brian may disagree, but the only way I saw to do it was to scrape several 1000 pages, grab only the relevant data, then get it into a format that a new site would support. In short, too much to bite off.

My suggestion is that you pick one of the many really good solutions that are out there and start a new VBC forum there, with a link back to this site. Yes, we'd lose search for this site from that one, but the N54 search feature is horrible (and won't get better, despite their promises) and most people don't use it, anyway. It'd be helpful, I think, to re-start some of the older, valuable threads here and let them get fresh input. Eventually, we'd wind up with much better content and almost everything that this forum has now.

I'm willing to pitch in, advise, supervise, or be summarily overruled. Maybe we could have a conversation between interested parties outside of here.

Bill

Posted By: Bobby Binder
I agree this place is an antique which may not be so bad for all the old dinosaurs here that collect vintage.

The important thing is to be able to change your DNS pointer to your new site or at least when you make a change be able to put a link here that takes them to the new site. If you are just making a new site and expect everyone to automatically go there you will lose a lot of people. The Net54 is a big group of forums so not sure if they will give you that permission?

Posted By: leon
Thanks for the support. There is also a chance we could lock this forum down for a while and have a link to it from somewhere else. That way we would have the information here, but only be able to add to the new forum. It's only a few hundred dollars a year and I am sure we could keep it for a year or two.... It's a thought. I agree with you about trying to scrub this info. It would be difficult at best. I have some ideas I will discuss with you and Brian (and E, if he wants to help)....as well as Dan B and Matt, if they (ya'll) would like? We'll be talking....btw, I just checked and I had posted questions both 7 and 9 days ago on the Net54 tech forum, with nary an answer or response as of yet.

edited to add that I was posting when a few responses came in. Bobby- that is exactly what I am thinking...a redirect and other measures to have our members go there automatically ...we won't do anything permaturely...

Posted By: dstudeba
I respect Bill and his opinions greatly, but I have to disagree. I think it would be difficult and take a long time to recreate a lot of the information that is archived on this site. The loss of threads from knowledgeable people that for whatever reason are no longer with us would be horrible. People still read the Trader Speaks and other older hobby publications, I see the old threads as harder to read but equally important.

Posted By: Butch & Co.
FWIW, from the furthest thing from major players on this forum...

If our vote has any weight, we strongly support doing whatever it takes to preserve and archive all the threads and posts that have accrued here over the years...

We had a similar situation a few years ago with a Yahoo forum that was being moved to another location. One of the biggest stumbling blocks then was that message threads could not be saved en masse, as it were -- only individual posts, one at a time. Several of the major and most active participants there took it upon themselves to "divvy up" the workload and indeed copy thousands of individual posts into an archive file. It was a hugely labor-intensive copy-paste procedure, and unfortunately, it was impossible to retain those posts in the original "interactive" format, but at least no important information was lost. Perhaps a similar volunteer effort among some of the folks here might be a possibility if it's beyond the scope of the tech people at any new hosting service...

Worth noting, perhaps, is that in the present Net54 format, entire threads can be saved with just a couple of clicks of the mouse button. Not sure, though, how mutually interactive those would be nor how they would (or could) be reorganized on a new host, but again, just a suggestion perhaps (perhaps not) worth investigating...

Posted By: Frank Wakefield
I know the error message and editing problems...

This site is really good because of the simple way threads list, the way posts are made, and the way photos are uplinked. I've been to some other similar sites, and none of the others have the ease and the flow that this one does. That is why folks come here.

It is a disaster to lose the old threads. In an ideal world someone could pull it all, put it into document files, edit out some of the crap threads, and create some files that would be the good of what's gone before. That could then be emailed to those of us who want it.

I don't see how what's been done in the past can be pasted into a new forum site.

What should happen is that N54 folks should fix what's wrong, then improve the search mechanism for searching old threads (not even they could tinker with it and make it worse, it could only get better).

Bobby had something about potentially losing folks if you change, I think he's right. I think you might gain a few. I know you'll lose a few.

Still, a move might be necessary.

One weighty decision... wish you well with it.

Posted By: Jeff W.
I really can't imagine losing people because we would move to another site. I truly believe that everybody who has made it to this site can probably make it to another site. I am all for a new site if it will allow us to not have any technical glitches, slow loading, etc. I am am little worried about losing all the information, but I have a feeling we will be able to transfer over the good one's.

Just my two cents

Jeff W.

Posted By: leon
I hope ya'll understand that we understand this is a major decision and we will not take it lightly at all. In a perfect world we would develop another site, load all of the Net54 information (I doubt we would edit any out), and then after the new one is tested and tested we would make the switch. I don't want to lose the archived threads and data either, as a few have mentioned. Our goal will be to accomplish everything and come out with a better site for everyone.

The problem is that Network54.com has been promising updates for literally 5 yrs (or more)...and there hasn't been any good ones at all. They don't seem to care. I have 0 hope they will fix this software in the next several years. Even beside the small outage today, which wasn't a big deal, there are so many quirky issues it has made my hair fall out ....(well, I thought I would throw that in as a scapegoat)

I/we have given thought to formats too. Contrary to some other forums/sites this one will remain as close to this format as is humanly possible. I have conferred with many board members and there are reasons this one is structured exactly as it is. As long as I am moderating it, it will probably remain with the same type format. I believe in ease of use over anything and this forum is very easy (as Frank said). I won't go to another format that is all jumbled up. I go to too many websites where there are a million things going on and jumping all over the place. How freakin' distracting is that? I feel each time we have made improvements to this site we have gotten a little better. I think most would concur. I expect no different methodology in the future. "Keep It Simple Stupid" is an old mantra for a reason.....I don't like change too much either, folks, but at some point I feel it is a disservice not to. Once again, rest assured, it will be easy to use and we won't go until it's tested and tested, if we make a move. It's not a firm decision but I expect us to probably start developing another site soon....Until then it will be everything as normal. If I had to guess, I would think it would be 1-3 months once we find another s/w we like before we would/could change....best regards

Posted By: Glen V
I would love to see new forum s/w. Instead of losing people, it might bring a few back. Some people don't post due to questions not getting answered and getting buried under OT topics. Not sure how important the archives are? There are some great posts, but plenty that just waste bits. Maybe if people put together a list of posts worthy of saving?

It is no secret, and if you read behind the scenes on the tech forums it would be imminently clear, that the devolopers of Net54 s/w have no love for AOL. I know RBCraik has some of those too and last night it was John D..... I think AOL might cause a little havoc at some other sites but not near what it does here. After Brian and I talk some more, as he will get the short end of this stick, we will give an update. It seems as though now folks are willing to take a look as long as we keep the same premise as we have here. I guess I would say that if you like Net54 now you will continue to like it, and if you don't like it now, you probably won't in the future. I think it's probably more of a personal issue about the way this site is managed but that is not the basis for this thread....regards

Posted By: Joann
I like this forum because it it so simple. I do like having all threads on the front page so you can browse everything at a glance - easier than opening categories for quick visits. So I appreciate that Leon will keep that open format.

On the other hand, I don't like the scan-bomb going off after one week, and sometimes larger scan file allowances would be handy too.

As far as preserving material from this forum, I think a key consideration is searchability after any move. Much as we value the history here, without searchability it's a pile of uncollated (and uncollatable) threads. I'd contemplate leaving if you cannot get technical support and you CAN take the archives.

N54 may be having economic problems like everyone else and they may have furloughed a few people to stay afloat. I just hope the alternative is in better shape and can provide you with a better search engine. Perhaps you can try a parallel site for a while. If you find that the other site works then just move the archives to the next host. If you find the other site is just as responsive and lacks anything better then you can make your decision on how to proceed.

There is a lot of good s/w out there it's just a matter of picking one. I am sure we will need to investigate a few things before we pick one to try. Posted By: Elliot
When I started this forum, the N54 software was if not cutting edge, at least very up to date. In the intervening years they have done very little to update the software and there is certainly a lot of better software providers now with a multitude of new features which would make the forum a better place.
I know all of the mods at one time or another have investigated moving the forum to a new provider, but the archives were always the primary stumbling block.
However, N54 seems unwilling (or unable) to improve their software, so a move is inevitable. Therefore, I feel a move sooner is probably better than later.
Since we don't want to make this move too often, it certainly makes sense to do a thorough analysis of the alternatives (and Leon certainly seems to have gone far down this road) to ensure that the right provider is selected.
I would certainly be willing to do whatever I could to help with the process.

It will look very much like this one but will be running on a webhosting server by yahoo and will be software that we won't have to rely on any other company for. It is owned, outright. It has a million bells and whistles and I think ya'll will really like it. Everything and anything you have seen on other boards, it has. And it is all under our control with no need for help from a company, Network54, that doesn't seem to care. Posted By: Marty Ogelvie

Jim,

I don't think the new software (vbulletin) will be much more complicated for posters like your or myself. The think the true complexity is behind the scenes. I think the users will enjoy more bells and whistles but you don't have to use them. If you can post on Net54, you can surely post on the new boards.. BTW, NET54 is far more complicated for regular posters than most any other bulletin board software available today.

The hardest part will be registering on the new boards (if Leon can't transfer his base over) and bookmarking the new site!

marty

Posted By: leon
The basics will definitely not change, as it will be just as easy to post, but anyone posting will have to re-register one time.... Overall the new platform is light years ahead of this one. I think it might be ready in a week or less at this point. Once we got going on the install, the back end looks detailed but not too difficult, and Brian is whipping along at breakneck speed. regards

Posted By: davidcycleback
I've seen many football teams fire a .500 coaches only discover he was better than anyone else they could get. I'd call this board a .500 board. It has its occasional issues and error messages, but generally works. If the next board is a Tom Landry, of even a Don Coryell, then go for it. Just realize the celebrated new coach sometime turns out to be a Don Morton (former 1980s Wisconsin Badgers coach who now work for a computer company in Fargo-- say no more). After just a few years of their new hire, the Badgers longed for the days of .500 ball. Though, to end to the story on a significantly positive note, the Badgers' replacement for Morton was a Notre Dame assistant coach named Barry Alvarez. Twenty years after that hire, Alvarez is universally ranked as the greatest coach in school history and there's a bronze statue of him in front of the stadium.

If you click on that, a screen comes up that asks if you want to add this site to your favorites. If you do so, it is stored in the "Favorites" listing on the upper right side of the AOL main page.

That's "bookmarking." It's the electronic version of folding over the corner of a catalog page that you want to go back to later.

Posted By: Todd Schultz
if you are used to accessing this board through a link on letstalksportscards, then I am confident my good friends over there will update the link to send you to the new site. Still, it wouldn't hurt to learn a couple new tricks. Bookmarking is easy and a huge timesaver.

Posted By: leon
We are in the process of porting over all of the old threads to the new board. Hopefully it will be done today. The new board is done except for that. It will certainly take Brian, Dan and myself some time to get used to the new back end of it but it will be well worth it. You guys are going to love it.

Jim Crandall- if you need personal help in navigating and using the new site I will help you through it. There is nothing to fear except fear itself.
