Posted By: Bob Manning
In fact Reindeer Bill was a catcher, and a pretty good one too. At least his friend GC Alexander thought so. When, in 1917, the Phils needed money, at Ol' Pete's request they were both traded to the Cubs, for Pickles Dillhoefer, Mike Prendergast and $55,000.

After has playing days he managed the Cubs and Browns for a total of nine years, never finishing higher than 4th. As a scout for Bill Veeck, he was instrumental in signing Larry Doby to an Indians contract, helping to break the color barrier in the AL.
