Posted By: <b>Paul Kaufman</b><p>This ad for Thoro-Bread Flour made by the Arnold Milling Co. of Sterling, KS was found in a trade journal dated October 1933 entitled &quot;The Northwestern Miller and American Baker&quot;.<br><br>By 1933, Edgar Rice Burroughs had already written 17 of his 26 Tarzan novels. The year 1932 marked the debut of the first feature-length Tarzan film, &quot;Tarzan, The Ape Man&quot; starring Johnny Weissmueller and Maureen O'Sullivan. In fact, the legend of Tarzan probably reached the height of popularity in the 1930's. Burroughs had extensive merchandising arrangements, and he was one of the first authors to incorporate, forming ERB Inc. in 1923. He licensed his character, Tarzan, to several hundred companies, with Tarzan's image appearing on watches, sweat shirts, ice cream cups, records, bubble gum and even bread wrappers. This &quot;Trophy&quot; card below, along with some other information, has led me to think that &quot;thoro&quot; was a type of bread and there were different brands and mfg's, sort of like white or wheat; but &quot;thoro&quot;. This ad above could be for &quot;Arnold Milling Thoro Bread&quot;? So, while I like this advertisement I am not yet persuaded that this is the same company that put the Tarzan cards out. (nothing personal <img src="/images/happy.gif" height="14" width="14" alt="happy.gif">) I have seen an apron, a long time ago, that had the Tarzan Thoro ad on it. I didn't end up with it but remember it didn't have any other info on the ad (that I could see). It would be nice to find a card with a coupon still on it. Either that, or a definitive ad, will hopefully be found in the future. This is still one of the hobby's little mysteries. And I am not trying to rain on your parade, Paul, just sharing what I know.
