Posted By: MikeThe Scrapps cards were made with glue on the back of them, so when they are graded is this taken into effect, or are they graded down because they have glue residue or stains on the back . I don't believe a card issued with a glue back should be graded down because it has glue on the back. Any comments ?

Somebody wrote into BCM's "Collector Q&A" to inquire about the values of a couple of Scrapps they had found in their grandpa's attic (YES! Back then, some of those stories *weren't* b.s.!). One of them was a Comiskey, and I was really taken aback by both the issue's artistic beauty and the die-cut shapes. Whoever responded to that collector's question said that the value was minimal as compared to most N-types. Funny how times change. Jodi

Posted By: David GoffRT&S was the advertising co. who sold these. They are not tobacco cards, but were a series of cards designed to be glued in scrapbooks. Hence the nickname "Scrapps" Back in the 1880's, scrap booking was very popular, much like today. It is assumed they were sold mainly to children for them to put in books. Which is why most of them are found with backs that have glue residue or missing. If I am wrong, can someone correct me.

Posted By: Fred CSGC does the best job of encapsulating this issue. SGC used to create custom inserts that really made the Scrapps standout. I've heard that they now charge for the custom cut insert. Does anyone know for sure if this is the case?

Posted By: Jodi BirkholmAs far as I can recall, yes, there is an added fee for the custom inserts. Rightfully so, considering that each one has to be painstakingly hand cut.

Posted By: Vincent I don't think I've seen an encapsulated example with the custom cut background. Just the square back, like the example previously posted. Anyone got a custom cut example to show ? I've got a nearly complete set stored in lucites, but have never seriously considered having them "slabbed". I felt the lucites did a nice job of that. But maybe the custom cut backs might motivate me to reconsider. Thanks.

Posted By: James GalloIt has a lot of glue either damage or residue on the back. That is why SGC hit it. Also looks like it may have some wear to the bottom. Now, we offer customers the option of having the insert die cut or squared off for encapsulation. The fee to grade Scrapps is $12 if you select the square insert and $25 if you select the die cut option. Posted By: joeHi Mike, those Scrapps above yours are mine. One thing I notice is that the Brouthers you posted has part of the Mustache missing. Mine looks to have the complete mustache. That may be part of the grading criteria on these cards. I really don't know, just an observation. Joe Ty Cobb, Spikes flying!

Posted By: Fred CIf it's $12 to grade a Scrapps and only $13 more (total $25) to have the custom insert then I'd definitely have the custom insert made for the card. The aesthetics of the custom insert is worth the extra dollars.
