Posted By: Mike
The Scrapps cards were made with glue on the back of them, so when they are graded is this taken into effect, or are they graded down because they have glue residue or stains on the back . I don't believe a card issued with a glue back should be graded down because it has glue on the back. Any comments ?

Posted By: Jodi Birkholm
This is somewhat on topic...

I recall first learning about Scrapps about 20 years ago. Somebody wrote into BCM's "Collector Q&A" to inquire about the values of a couple of Scrapps they had found in their grandpa's attic (YES! Back then, some of those stories *weren't* b.s.!). One of them was a Comiskey, and I was really taken aback by both the issue's artistic beauty and the die-cut shapes. Whoever responded to that collector's question said that the value was minimal as compared to most N-types. Funny how times change.

Jodi

Posted By: David Goff
RT&S was the advertising co. who sold these. They are not tobacco cards, but were a series of cards designed to be glued in scrapbooks. Hence the nickname "Scrapps" Back in the 1880's, scrap booking was very popular, much like today. It is assumed they were sold mainly to children for them to put in books. Which is why most of them are found with backs that have glue residue or missing. If I am wrong, can someone correct me.

Posted By: Mike
Thanks for the information. My misconception. I thought they had a sticker back to be licked etc. but it appears glue needed to be applied to them.

Posted By: Fred C
SGC does the best job of encapsulating this issue. SGC used to create custom inserts that really made the Scrapps standout. I've heard that they now charge for the custom cut insert. Does anyone know for sure if this is the case?

Posted By: Jodi Birkholm
As far as I can recall, yes, there is an added fee for the custom inserts. Rightfully so, considering that each one has to be painstakingly hand cut.

Posted By: Vincent

I don't think I've seen an encapsulated example with the custom cut background. Just the square back, like the example previously posted.

Anyone got a custom cut example to show ? I've got a nearly complete set stored in lucites, but have never seriously considered having them "slabbed". I felt the lucites did a nice job of that. But maybe the custom cut backs might motivate me to reconsider.

Thanks.

Posted By: Jon Canfield
Vincent - the one posted above is the custom cut example. As for pricing - I just had a Scrapps encapsulated a few weeks back. I believe it was $20 or $25 for the custom cutting. SGC called me to give me the choice as to which method I preferred.

======================================
For the premier online souce of information on baseball-related cigarette packs, visit http://www.baseballandtobacco.com

Posted By: James Gallo
It has a lot of glue either damage or residue on the back. That is why SGC hit it. Also looks like it may have some wear to the bottom. I would also think there may be a like crease but the glue and amount of it is what did it in.

James G

Looking for 1915 Cracker Jacks and 1909-11 American Caramel E90-1.

Posted By: Brian
Just wanted to clarify some things about the encapsulation of Scrapps...

We used to die cut the insert to the exact fit of the Scrapps card as standard practice. Now, we offer customers the option of having the insert die cut or squared off for encapsulation. The fee to grade Scrapps is $12 if you select the square insert and $25 if you select the die cut option. When submitting them for grading, you can write your preference in the variations/comments column on the invoice and add the appropriate fee.

Thanks,

Brian Dwyer
SGC
1-800-742-9212 x114

Posted By: Mike
Brian: Look at the 2 above Brouthers both graded 30, they are not even close. It appears one has a crease and the other doesn't and the glue on the back is very different in degree. Thanks for your time. Should I resubmit. Please email me: theline06@hotmail.com
Posted By: joe
Hi Mike, those Scrapps above yours are mine. One thing I notice is that the Brouthers you posted has part of the Mustache missing. Mine looks to have the complete mustache. That may be part of the grading criteria on these cards. I really don't know, just an observation.

Joe

Ty Cobb, Spikes flying!

Posted By: Fred C
If it's $12 to grade a Scrapps and only $13 more (total $25) to have the custom insert then I'd definitely have the custom insert made for the card. The aesthetics of the custom insert is worth the extra dollars.
