View Full Version : Are the 1921 E121 Cards with the Holsom Bread Backs Very Scarce?

Posted By: <b>Jerry</b><p>The Holsum Bread cards are definatley scarce but they can be found with some regularity.. They have their own Designation I think they are D327's ,without looking. I don't believe this is an original ACC Designation though but added later. <br /><br />I have handled about 20 of these cards in the last couple years that I acquired from a Louisianna dealer. A few of them were uncataloged Cards.<br /><br />Goodwin, I think had a nice collection of them for auction in the last year or so..<br /><br />There are 2 Versions of the backs with different length text. I'm not sure if one back is scarcer than the other. <br /><br />The checklist is incomplete due to their scarcity.<br /><br />There are others that know more about the set than me, so maybe they will chime in with more info for you.

Posted By: <b>Paul</b><p>To decide how tough these are, you have to decide if you are looking for one sample of any player, or if you are looking for a card of a particular player. If you are just looking for one sample of any player, I agree they are very tough but not impossible. Some of the rare M101-4/5 backs would be tougher. But if you are looking for a specific player, they are as tough as anything else out there. As far as I know, there are only one or two known examples of the Joe Jackson. There are plently of players who were almost certainly in the set, but whose cards have never been located. Others would know better than me, but I'm not sure there are any players with more than a handful of copies known.

This is the only set in the E121 family which included the Black Sox players, also it is the only set to use team nicknames on front as opposed to the "American" or Nationals" designation (although most cards in the set are usually found with the later designations, mainly the Chicago players are those with the nicknames). <br /><br />As for dating, Amos Strunk is in the set with Chicago AL and he began the 1920 season with Philadelphia AL and played 58 games with them before going to the Chicago team. Thus, mid-1920 is the earliest the first set could have been produced. I have yet to find a player in the set that began with the team in 1921 and is pictured with that team.
