Posted By: Richard
Greetings everyone. Are the 1921 E cards with the Holsom Bread add on the back tough backs? I was wondering because you dont see them very often. Any info on these would be appreciated.
Thanks
Posted By: Jerry
The Holsum Bread cards are definatley scarce but they can be found with some regularity.. They have their own Designation I think they are D327's ,without looking. I don't believe this is an original ACC Designation though but added later.

I have handled about 20 of these cards in the last couple years that I acquired from a Louisianna dealer. A few of them were uncataloged Cards.

Goodwin, I think had a nice collection of them for auction in the last year or so..

There are 2 Versions of the backs with different length text. I'm not sure if one back is scarcer than the other.

The checklist is incomplete due to their scarcity.

There are others that know more about the set than me, so maybe they will chime in with more info for you.

Posted By: Jason Carota
As Jerry said, there are two backs. Here is the more common version:

The tougher version's "H. Weil Baking Company" text stretches the length of the "Holsum Bread" text.

Posted By: Richard
Wow! Thanks very much for all of the info. I must pick one up for my Type collection. I wonder if Rogers Hornsby is found with this back? One last question regarding the Holsum Bread cards. Are they definately a 1921 issue?
Thanks

If you are just looking for one sample of any player, I agree they are very tough but not impossible. Some of the rare M101-4/5 backs would be tougher. But if you are looking for a specific player, they are as tough as anything else out there. As far as I know, there are only one or two known examples of the Joe Jackson. There are plently of players who were almost certainly in the set, but whose cards have never been located. Others would know better than me, but I'm not sure there are any players with more than a handful of copies known.

Posted By: fkw
With players not found in E121.... Joe Jackson, Cicotte, and Lefty Williams, I would say the issue is before 1921.

Are there any players that prove it to be a post1921 issue (ie Maranville with Pittsburgh)?

Posted By: Rhett Yeakley
My theory on the first sries Holsum's (the "H" all the way to the left on back) is that they were the first of all E121 like cards and were issued in late 1920. This is the only set in the E121 family which included the Black Sox players, also it is the only set to use team nicknames on front as opposed to the "American" or Nationals" designation (although most cards in the set are usually found with the later designations, mainly the Chicago players are those with the nicknames).

As for dating, Amos Strunk is in the set with Chicago AL and he began the 1920 season with Philadelphia AL and played 58 games with them before going to the Chicago team. Thus, mid-1920 is the earliest the first set could have been produced. I have yet to find a player in the set that began with the team in 1921 and is pictured with that team. So the working timeline is mid-1920.

Bob Roth only played with Washington in 1920 with whom he is pictured in the type 1 set, then going to the Yankees for the entire 1921 season (and was produced in E121 Series of 80 for the Yanks)

-Rhett

Some Holsums:
Strunk Type 1 (w/ nickname) and Type 2 (w/ Americans)

Other Type 1's:

Posted By: Richard
If I am understanding this timeline correctly then most of this set E121 with Holsum backs was issued in 1921? I just bought a Red Faber. I would imagine it is circa 1921 then?
Thanks again for all of the information. I found this thread very interesting and informative.
