Posted By: Ted Zanidakis
Here are the details of my just completed all-SWEET CAPORAL (Factory 30, 2nd Dist. N.Y.) set.

The following reasons for choosing the Factory 30 version (as opposed to the Factory 25) are:

1....American Litho. printed virtually all the T206 Subjects with this back (except the Southern
Leaguers); therefore, no guesswork in searching for those "tricky" No Prints.

2....The Sweet Cap. Factory 30 cards are much more available than the Sweet Cap. Factory 25.

My set is missing only 4 cards........

Honus Wagner....Sweet Cap 150/30

Eddie Plank....Sweet Cap 150/30

Jack Chesbro....Sweet Cap 150/30

Harry Krause (pitching)....Sweet Cap 350/30

Here are the 55 - NO PRINT's in this Sweet Caporal (Factory 30) set.....

Ray Demmitt (St Louis)
Joe Doyle (error)
Red Kleinow (Boston)
Carl Lundgren (Cubs)
Sherry Magie
Bill O'Hara (St. Louis)
Frank Smith (Chicago & Boston)
and,
all 48 - Southern League cards

Therefore, a complete Sweet Cap/30 set consists of 469 cards.

A sampling of some of this set's stars from their respective Series are shown here......

So, this adventure culminates my goal to complete the 3 most available T-brand sets in the T206 issue.
Constructing these "all-T brand" T206 sub-sets, in my opinion, is the only proven way to actually confirm
what backs the T206 ballplayers were printed on.

All together, I have completed a grand total of 5 - T206 sets since 1977. My current ones are......

1.....all-PIEDMONT, Factory 25....(99% complete) set of 519 cards

2.....all-SWEET CAPORAL, Factory 30....(99.5% complete) set of 467 cards

3.....all-SOVEREIGN, Factory 25....(100% complete) set of 410 cards

I would like to thank the Net54er's who have helped me to achieve these goals these past 4 years.

edited to add that I acquired the Chesbro and Krause cards. Now, all I need is Plank and Wagner

TED Z

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis
What's next ? .....I have another 500+ assorted T206's. And, if I get around to sorting them,
perhaps I'll see a pattern that will motivate me to put together a 4th T-brand set.

Still ongoing is my American Beauty 460 sub-set. It has taken me longer to approach the 67,
or so, cards needed to complete this run than the above 3 sets. So far, I have 44 different
Subjects with a AB 460 backs.

TED Z

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis
You asked......
"Do you still have these sets or did you trade off the sovereigns and piedmonts to complete the next task?"

I will answer you by starting from the beginning....as, I think it is worthwhile noting.

I put together my 1st T206 set (521 cards with Magie) in the 1980's. I sold it to one of my best buddies in
this hobby (a Net54er) back in 1997.

In 2005, I was fortunate to acquire a T206 collection of 555 cards (with 35 rare backs). So, I completed a
2nd T206 set of 520 different cards.

Net54 motivated me to start an all-PIEDMONT set. This 2nd set comprised of 33% PIEDMONT cards (inclu-
ding many of the HOFers). So, I was on my way to complete this set, by breaking up the 2nd set and sel-
ling or trading off the non-Piedmont cards.

I currently have all three of these sets......

.....all-PIEDMONT, Factory 25....(99% complete) set of 519 cards

.....all-SOVEREIGN, Factory 25....(100% complete) set of 410 cards

.....all-SWEET CAPORAL, Factory 30....(99.5% complete) set of 467 cards

I intend to keep the PIEDMONT and SOVEREIGN sets. And, will probably sell the SWEET CAPORAL set.

Thanks for asking,

TED Z

Wonder where we'd be today if Burdick had not lumped the white border cards together, but instead had separated them by brand...

Great stuff!!!

Frank W.

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis
The more I study the "Monster", the more I agree with what you said regarding the classifying of T206's by T-brand sub-sets.

If Jefferson Burdick considered doing this back then, then in all these years since, we would have identified the actual number
of Subjects comprising each of the 15 (or 16) Tobacco brands.

And, this set would not be the "Monster" that it is due to all its front/back permutations. However, had American Litho. equally
printed all 522 Subjects with each T-brand, then "lumping" together and calling this set "T206" does make sense.

But, as we all know, this was not the way T206's were printed.

TED Z

Archive
09-05-2008, 08:46 PM
Posted By: Craig W
Hi Tim, It basically includes everything EXCEPT FOR:

The ~12 cards in the 150-Only Series,

Some no-prints from the 150-350 Series (Dahlen Portrait, Ewing Follow Thru, Ganley Fielding, Tom Jones Follow Thru, Karger Batting, Lindaman Ready to Throw, Lundgren Ready to Throw, George Mullin Horizontal,

And the Big Six (Demmitt StL, Joe Doyle NY Nat'l, Magee Error, O'Hara StL, Plank, Wagner).

Since the back of the Old Mill Southern Leaguers is different than the other Old Mill backs, you could opt not to include them.

Ted Z, Scot R, Brian W, would have a better idea of the no-prints.

So, It's over 450 cards, but doesn't include the Big Six, so it's do-able, especially in F-VG condition as I often see these on eBay. Just a guestimate would be $20,000.

Best Regards,
Craig

Posted By: Craig W
TED Z

Just saw your post to me in this thread. I'll try to send you an email with my updated PB spreadsheet this weekend or next week. My herd has now surpassed 130 in a little over two months. Actually, there's not much of a shortage of them. Of my list of 252 confirmed PBs, I've seen all but 26 for sale on ebay, bst, seller sites, and auction sites. I think I told you I picked up the Demmitt, I've seen a couple more since then. I haven't got O'Hara yet, but I've seen a couple for sale. So I wouldn't consider these two exceptionally rare, just expensive. Also, I've yet to come across any that contradict the no-print list.

Again, congrats on completing another back set! And if you ever do decide to go for a Polar Bear set, I'll be cheering for you all the way!

Take Care & Best Regards
Craig
Posted By: Ted Zanidakis
Although, the possible T206's with an OLD MILL (OM) back approaches 500 Subjects (incl. So. Lgrs.); currently, there have been
280 cards confirmed with the OM back. Therefore, you can expect many NO PRINTS....and, therein lies the big challenge to put-
ting together an OM set.

An OLD MILL sub-set includes......

3 - Cobb's

Dahlen (Brooklyn)

Elberfeld (Washington-portrait)

2 - Johnson's

2 - Matty's

2 - CYoung's

48 - Southern Leaguers

Approx. cost.....$24,000 (for a Vg-Ex set)

TED Z
