Posted By: Chris Counts
I really like the image. The players look like they're having a good time. Check out the sailors at the left, one even has a glove on ... I'd guess it's a WWII era photo. I can't make out the lettering on their jerseys. Is there any writing on the back? Can you make a larger scan?

Posted By: robert a
Chris,

The back states, "I thought maybe you would like to have a picture of Chink and I on the baseball team."

Under it states, "Chink Winslow and Dewey Tate

The uniforms say Indianapolis but the letters are backwards.

David,

That seems like it makes a lot of sense. Good call.

Anyways, I know this is not really on topic for this board so thanks for humoring me.

Rob

Posted By: Chris Counts
Robert,

I did a couple "Hail Mary" searches on Google to see if anything came up. I couldn't find a single Chink Winslow, but I found a few Chick Winslows. Dewey Tate is a surprisingly common name. I found a few, including one who was African-American, who were born just after World War I ... Neither name, by the way, is listed on the crew of the U.S.S. Indianapolis when it went down in the waning days of the war. About 900 sailors were lost. Also, I believe the negative was reversed on the photo ... the two lefties are probably righties ...
