Posted By: Adam Baxter
As many of you may remember back in June there was a series of severe floods in the midwest. One of the areas hardest hit was Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Former Negro Leagues player Art Pennington (1940-46, 1950 Chicago American Giants, 1946 Pittsbugh Crawfords, as well as Mexican league, PCL, etc.) is a resident of Cedar Rapids and like many of his neighbors, he lost everything he owned during the flood. This included all of the irreplacable memorabila that he acquired over the course of his baseball career. Mr. Pennington has a webpage set up for fans on Myspace.com. There is a section on his page for donations to help Art recover from this setback. Anyone interested in making a donation or to send a message of support can do so at the link below:

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=198526432

Thanks,

Adam

Posted By: Adam Baxter
I hear ya Howard, thanks for the reply. Times are tough for everyone these days and I'm those who can help out, will do so.

I just found an Associated Press interview with Art on YouTube which is just heartbreaking. Reminds me of the sad story with Ted Page years back when a couple of scumbags broke into his house and stole memorabilia from his playing days. These poor guys couldn't catch a break when they played due to racism, etc., and for many they still can't catch break after their careers are over.

Link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QsCps4aGkc

-Adam

zeenuts@gmail.com

Just curious if anyone who donated ever received an acknowledgment from Art? At one point the myspace page said a signed baseball would be sent for $50 donations but at the very minimum a signed Thank You card would be sent.

I sent $50 and didn't receive any acknowledgement.

I sent a $20 donation and received a thank you letter along with 2 or 3 signed homemade cards. I wasn't expecting anything in return, so it was a bonus.
