COOPERSTOWN Show report & BB card pick-ups

Posted By: <b>Ted Zanidakis</b><p>The BB card Show last weekend was less attended than previous years' shows. This is attributable to this year's<br /> lower attendance for the HOF ceremonies. It was estimated that only 14,000 saw Goose Gossage, Bowie Kuhn,<br /> Walter O'Malley, Billy Southworth, and Dick Williams inducted into the HOF. Previous year's average crowds have<br /> been 20-25K.<br /><br />Here are some of the cards I acquired from "walk-ins" at the show........<br /><br /><br />Cut panels from T202 cards....including Ty Cobb<br /><br /><img src="http://www.freephotoserver.com/v001/tedzan/at202panelscobb.jpg"><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />Arguably, the toughest 1934 Goudey Hi #....Hazen "KiKi" Cuyler (other than Lajoie)<br /><br /><img src="http://www.freephotoserver.com/v001/tedzan/billwerberkikicuyler.jpg"><br /><br />And, 1934 Goudey Hi #....Billy Werber....who just turned 100 years old last month.<br /><br /><br /><br />Two ORANGE T206's (Beckley & Devlin) and a PINK/ORANGE Kling<br /><br /><img src="http://www.freephotoserver.com/v001/tedzan/a3oranget206ewing.jpg"><br /><br />And, a T206 Ewing with a very rare PIEDMONT 350 back.<br /><br /><br /><br />TED Z<br /><br />

There aren't too many really good restaurants<br /> left in the Cooperstown area, anymore. We have been going there on HOF week since 1985 and every<br /> year it seems like another fine dining place didn't survive the winter. There used to be many to choose<br /> from. Our favorite restaurant these past 5 years is a little place in the tiny village of Fly Creek....just a <br />few miles north of Cooperstown.<br /><br />Incidently Marty....Frank "Spec" Shea was the pitching consultant in The Natural.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br />MARTY O<br /><br />You darn right about KiKi Cuyler. Years ago, when I put together a 1934 Goudey set, Cuyler was the<br /> last card I needed to complete this set. I have seen Cuyler on many wantlists. I really do not under-<br />stand why he is tougher than the other 23 cards in the Hi # series ? All 24 Hi #s were printed equally<br /> on a 25-card sheet, which included the 1933 Goudey Lajoie (card #106).<br /><br />Can anyone out there explain why Cuyler is so tough to find ?<br /><br /><br />TED Z<br /><br />

Posted By: <b>Frank Wakefield</b><p>Hey Ted, Marty...<br /><br />I don't have all of the 34 Goudey high number cards. Cuyler is one of the ones I lack. I don't think there's a shortage of his cards. I think that 2 factors tighten the supply. One, he's the only high number guy in the Hall. That is the major reason. Two, he was active in baseball after his career, coaching in the minors, winning a championship in the Southern Association, and coaching for the Cubs and Red Sox. I think to a lesser degree that adds to the number of folks who would have sought his cards.<br /><br />So I think the 1934 Cuyler card sells for a premium above the other 1934 high number Goudeys... for those two reasons.

Posted By: <b>barry arnold</b><p>Ted,<br />I'm mainly decorating the 206 room with my favorites and buying some great 206 era packs.<br />I think i'm up to 13 now.<br />I did make sure to do a display of cards from 1908-1915 to surround the beloved 206s with their 'buddy' years.<br />It's all great fun!<br />thanks for all your superb teaching.<br /><br />best,<br />barry

I enjoyed the Cooperstown experience on Saturday, and was glad to meet you at the show. Living only an hour away in Syracuse for the past 18 years, I can't believe I waited this long to visit Cooperstown during induction weekend. <br /><br />Of course, the other big highlight was purchasing my very first T206 card from you. I don't know when I'll grab the next one, but may this be the start of a wonderful journey. Your back research has inspired me to focus solely on non-southern league Old Mill backs. Saves me the hardship of needing the big 6, and perhaps give me a chance to contribute some research to this great forum.<br /><br />And Barry A: I know the Monster will want me to quit. Posted By: <b>Joe Drouillard</b><p>Hello Everyone,<br /><br />Just got back from vacation, part of which was Cooperstown on Induction weekend. Definately less crowded and the weather was great. <br /><br />I did pick up a few Ts from Ted and from Don Flewelling. Nice cards at a fair price. I was introduced to Don by Ted and was very impressed by the number of T206s and other Prewar cards he had for sale. I could have really made a lot of headway on my T206 collection if I had more money to spend, but there is always next year. I really didn't have a lot of time to shop the other vendors, but the few things that I looked at were priced very high. I don't know how most vendors sell any 1950-1970 cards at 10% off book price. <br /><br />Don suggested that the place to sell prewar baseball cards was antique auctions instead of baseball card shows. I thought that was interesting. He also said it was a great place to gain access to private collections for sale.<br /><br />I also made a pretty good dent on my single sign HOF baseball collection. I only collect autographed baseballs that are signed in front of me. I added twelve more to the collection this weekend. I only need Yaz, Lasorda, Kaline, Dick Williams, Koufax, Niekro, Stargell, Ripken, Banks, MacPhail, and Robin Yount to have all of the living HOFers. I suppose several of these will be difficult to get in the future, I don't recall ever seeing Yaztremski on HOF weekend. At least he doesn't sign.<br /><br />Visiting the Hall itself is always a lot of fun. This year we viewed the second floor on Friday and the main hall on Sunday. I asked to see the stuff in the basement, but they told me (with a chuckle)that I would have to move to the next membership level just to have a look from the top of the stairs. As to places to eat: There is a nice restraunt right on the Lake by the tour boat. They have great steaks for a resonable price. My wife and I had a great time eating, shopping and just being together in baseball's Mecca on the holiest weekend of the year. Overall, it was a great time and I would recommend the pilgrimage to any baseball fan.<br /><br />Best wishes,<br /><br />Joe
