It was marked as a 23-24 by PSA and it may be. I have three of these, two with stands in background, and one with a black background. There is also a Raymond Powell Exhbit with the same photo that is a part of the 1921 set I believe. I know usually the script is the way to tell the difference between the 21's and the 23-24 set. If that is the case, then isn't this a 1921? Thanks for any help clearing this up.

Posted By: Rhett Yeakley
Jeff, a few years ago they added the second version of thw 1923-24 Powell to the SCD (the one with the stands). I have been wondering the same thing as you, as I was always under the assumption that the one with stands was 1921 and the one with them blacked out was the 1923-24. I have no idea what prompted them (SCD)to make the addition, as I think the card with stands is always a 1921 card.

I have a stands in background card that has been graded by SGC as a 1923-24 but I am sure it isn't.
-Rhett
Posted By: Jeff Mohler
Hi Guys

I think the difference is that the 1921 Powell Exhibit does not have a white border (at least according to the image on VCP). The purported 1923 Powell exhibit card on Ebay does have a white border. The only difference between some of the 1923 Exhbits and 1921 Exhibits are the white borders on the 1923 cards (the Ruth is a good example). In these cases, the scripts do not change. However, on purely 1923 issues, the scripts generally appear thinner than the 1921 cards and larger than the thin script on the 1922 cards.

What makes it really confusing is that some of the 1921 exhibits have white borders (Alexander is the only one that comes to mind) and don't appear in the 1923 set at all.

I don't know if Adam knows the reason behind all this or not, but hopefully he will chime in.

Posted By: Rhett Yeakley
I have never seen a Powell with stands with no border. If one exists that would make sense, but I wouldn't necessarily trust a pic on cardpricer or anything like that as it may just be a crop job.

The border/no border thing is NOT a good way of telling which year the card came from. As the following 1921's all have a border...Alexander, O.Bush, Cobb, Gowdy, Hornsby, etc., etc.

The script on the 1922's is very distinct but the 1921's and the 1923-24's can be somewhat confusing, as they often look very similar. Dugan below is 1921 and the Clark is 1923-24

-Rhett

Posted By: jeffdrum
Rhett that is why I asked if anyone has an actual scan of an actual '21 Powell they own with stands and NO border. I am not saying that is not the answer to the question, but in 20+ years of collecting Exhibits, I have never seen one.

Sans a scan, I am inclined to believe that all stands in background may be 1921s.

Posted By: Rhett Yeakley
Jeff, agreed. We have both been wondering the same thing.

There is at least one cropping difference in the 1921-24 series that has yet to be catalogued. One of the croppings is likely a 1922 and the other a 1923-24 but short of determining which one is tougher I don't know how one would know. I have shown it before but it has been a while...

-Rhett
Posted By: jeffdrum
Thought I would take one more shot @ this. Can anyone provide a scan of a borderless Raymond Powell (Stands in Background) Exhibit that purports to be from 1921. Still trying to figure out if the bordered Stands in Background is actually the 1921 copy and that the dark background the "only" '23'24 version. Thanks.

Posted By: Scott Mt. Joy
Excellent Info.

I have two Powells that I had down as 1921 both with border and if I remember right with stands (one raw, the other graded SGC 50). I will see if I can get some scans tonight or tomorrow night and post them up. I know the raw one I have I got in a low grade lot of 11 all 1921's.

Posted By: boxingcardman
I am certain is the 1921. Virtually every Powell card I've ever seen has been stands in BG. I have never seen one of either format without a border.

Sic Gorgiamus Allos Subjectatos Nunc

Posted By: jeffdrum
Thanks for the feedback. I guess no one has a Stands in Background borderless 1921 Exhibit. At a minimum I would say that if one exists there are a lot of "complete" 1921 Exhibit sets that aren't. Until I see a scan, I remained unconvinced, thx again.

Posted By: Jeff Mohler
Is the purchaser one of the whales? He was buying a bunch of Exhibts last night.

My bid was blown away. I was trying to upgrade from an SGC 20, so I was not bidding too hard.

Posted By: Jimmy Muscarella
I'm not sure if the winner is one of "them", but he has won several over the past few months at really high prices (at least I think they are). Note: he did beat another whale, which helped to push the price way up.

Posted By: Scott Mt. Joy
Winner is a whale for sure and I bet he has no idea its a 23-24, he has been paying big bucks for the highest graded in many exhibit sets, has paid over 1k for a psa 6 1934 common, two whales were bidding, lol.
