Posted By: Jamie
Well it was a fascinating journey, and there are many Board members that I need to say thanks to for all the help!!! I started with just 1 card which I had for many years, and in December thought it would be cool to try to get to 520 completing the set minus the big 4. So in Dec I purchased my 2nd t206 off ebay and discovered Net54. From there I got hooked checking the BST and Ebay regularly for lots and deals here and there, selling off the doubles when I got any.

I was at 514 after 3 months (in March) but it seems that as your looking for less and less cards they become harder to find in the affordable category. It is now the end of May and a full 5 months has passed. I just got number 520 and have put all 520 in an album for anyone who has interest to check out.

Notes about the Collection:
5 months from 1 to 520.
Total cost was $11,920.
Only 11 cards were over the $100 mark including: Green Cobb, Both Walter Johnsons, all 3 Cy Youngs, Demmit and O'Hara St. Louis, Elberfeld Wash, Tris Speaker and Mathewson Dark Cap.
Only 20 cards (including the 11 above) cost $50 and over.
Rare Backs: 3 Blank Back SLers, 1 Red Hindu and the upside down error back Cy Young.
Of the 520, there are 92 Graded cards in the set.

I have a spread sheet and can breakdown the $11,920 per card if anyone is interested in seeing that email me and I will send it over.

For the most part they are beaters, some of them are nicer, have a look for yourself. I will be keeping the set for a long time hopefully, but I guess the one thing I am wondering is how much is the 520 worth that i have put together.. have a look you might see some cards that used to be yours

And again Thanks to all the Board members who helped me get there

http://s251.photobucket.com/albums/gg309/blunder19/T206%20520%20Set/?start=all

Jamie
(Blunder19)

Posted By: george gogol
What a great set! You will thoroughly enjoy your set, but the fun is putting it together, so what are you going after now? I have enjoyed reading about your set and watching you final stretch on the BST. As far as value I would think you could get $18,000+ in one of the big auction houses, no less for sure. Thanks again for sharing your scans.

Posted By: Iggy
Congratulations Jamie! A great accomplishment that hopefully your grand kids will talk about one day. Although, I think you are "1/2" a card short; until you find the rest of that T206 Red Cobb. By the way, was that an upside down Cy Young I saw??? I'll give you $1000 for it (just kidding.....).

The value of the entire set(?), I would agree with the $18,000 figure. As an FYI, in the latest REA auction a complete set went for $35,250 plus the juice. I actually thought it was going to go for a little more (and if I would have won the lottery that night, the high bidder was going to get some competition). The set was missing the big Four and was a mixed of Poor thru Vg/Ex cards with the stars averaging VG (sixteen of the $$$ cards were graded). Of course, it didn't have an upside down Cy Young.

Lot 212 in the following link:
http://www.robertedwardauctions.com/auction/2008/index.html

Now, to complete your set. You have to create a subset with all the backs represented... Just throwing a subliminal message out there...

Lovely Day...

Posted By: Jamie
Thanx for the feedback everyone.. Im hoping to upgrade 1 at a time and turn this beater set into an all VG+ set... my first goal is to upgrade the red cobb and will look to do that in june or july....
next I was thinking about the cracker jack set.. but I will have to close a few more deals for the kind of commission it will take to put that together

Posted By: Jamie
Magie and plank are not out of the question either although spending 20K on 2 cards would be a long way away for me right now...

I think for the short term I would like to try collecting different backs and variations.. like ghost prints, error backs and color missing cards.

anyone have any cool ghost prints or errors for sale ?

Posted By: boxingcardman
And so cheap, too; well, you know what I mean. It is interesting how "litle" it costs and how readily a highly motivated collector can assemble a collector grade T206 short set. Upgrading as you've indicted will probably take you years more, but then that's the fun of this thing of ours.

Sic Gorgiamus Allos Subjectatos Nunc

Posted By: Iggy...
If I could inject some humor into what is a serious situation...

Jamie, how is this for a brainstorm....sell both the house and the T206 set together. As a package deal... That way, you get rid of two monsters in one scoop. If you want your "5 minutes" of fame, well here is your opportunity. You will get alot of publicity and offers, probably make the national news. Of course, you will have to install an alarm system in the house, perhaps hire 24-hour security, and live in a Motel for a while. But heck, it will be all worth it, when you end-up swapping stories on the David Lettermen show...

Lovely Day

Posted By: leon
This reminds me of my card collecting. I spend multiples of what I should on my personal collection. Quite some time ago my wife just quit asking about it. It keeps us both happier. Every time I spend more than I should I start looking for a few things to cull from the collection to make up for the funds spent. I am in that mode again.....(please no emails about selling things in my personal collection...it's something I have to do on my own)....So Jamie, I think most of us can empathize with you very easily.....Good luck with the task at hand....
