Posted By: ali_lapoint
i know this isn't vintage or pre-war but i got an email from beckett today. the e-mail said that the new "sport kings series b" hobby boxes will include a one-of-one card that can be redeemed for an unopened 1933 goudey pack. i wonder what that would fetch on the open market. would you open it?

inspired by leon's thread.

Posted By: fkw
I believe there was a hoard of unopened R338 Sport Kings packs discovered sometime ago. I see the wrapper sell for only $15-$25 all the time now.

Maybe someone knows more about these packs (wrappers) that seem to be very common now.

Posted By: Phil B
They (the new owners of the modern Sport Kings company) bought that unopened pack just a few months ago at auction (so you can easily discover the exact value of the pack but I just can't recall which auction). Just after the auction ended I posted the question here as to why someone would pay such a crazy price for a supposedly unopened pack of Sport Kings particularly since whatever card was inside was not likely to come close in value to the price paid. The answers came back that there are "pack collectors" who don't care at all about the card inside but want to have an example of such a pack in opened condition. However, in this case the true answer to my question turned out to be that the current Sport Kings owner had decided to make an unopened pack the premium chase item for Series B. So apparently they were going to pay whatever it took to get that unopened pack (I believe it was over 10K). It was in a GAI slab if I recall correctly.

Posted By: Anthony N.
A few recent prices:

A GAI 7 SK pack sold in a private transaction this month for $5800.
A GAI 7 SK pack sold in Memory Lane for $8114. May '08
A GAI 6 SK pack sold in Memory Lane for $11,157. in Sept '07
an ungraded Sport Kings pack sold at the '04 National for $3000.

these are the only ones I"ve seen since I started looking in Spring '04. The GAI 7 in the private transaction was not the one sold in Memory Lane. I don't know if the ungraded one from the '04 National ended up getting graded (it definitely wasn't the GAI 7 that was on ebay and sold privately), so it could be reflected in the sales above.
