Posted By: <b>Mark Anderson</b><p>Beckett Media would like to take this opportunity to update everyone on the T206 Cobb Red Portrait Drum Back card situation.<br /><br />You may catch up on the card in question on the following thread:<br /><br /><a href="http://www.network54.com/Forum/153652/thread/1211990432/last-1213842905/T206+Red+Cobby-Drum+on+ebay" target="_new" rel="nofollow">http://www.network54.com/Forum/153652/thread/1211990432/last-1213842905/T206+Red+Cobby-Drum+on+ebay</a><br /><br />Brent Huigens at PWCC Auctions was very accommodating in working out an agreement with Beckett Grading Services/Beckett Vintage Grading in case the card did, in fact, show signs of being re-backed. Upon receipt of the card and close examination, we do believe the card is a re-backed<br />example and are in the process of completing a repurchase of the card to permanently remove it from circulation.<br /><br />The card was graded in the first few months of BVG's inception (early 2002), and simply put, we made a mistake in authenticating and encapsulating this card. Since that time, numerous positive changes have been made in the BVG system, including bringing in a new Senior Vintage Grader (an active pre-war specialist and a member of the Net 54 boards) in 2004. We strive to be as diligent as possible in every card we authenticate, and assure you that this mistake was an anomaly, and one<br />we will learn many lessons from. We will be using this particular card in the future to help teach other collectors how to spot re-backed cards, but will be clearly marking the card to assure that it will never re-enter the marketplace and fool another unsuspecting collector.<br /><br />We want to publicly thank the members of the Network 54 Vintage community for bringing this to everyone's attention, and for the evidence provided.<br /><br />We would especially like to thank Brent Huigens at PWCC for his professionalism throughout the process and going out of his way to help get this card taken out of circulation. In taking the auction down upon learning of the situation, and helping us quickly arrive at a solution for re-purchasing the card, it speaks very highly of Mr. Huigens' integrity and commitment to the vintage card community.<br /><br />I look forward to meeting many of you at the Net 54 Dinner at the NSCC next month, and I am always available for other questions or comments you may have. It's so easy to do the right thing.....It might be a tad painful in the short run but in the long run it's ALWAYS worth it....And to think...this didn't even have to go to court... <img src="/images/happy.gif" height=14 width=14><br />

It has nothing to do with Beckett or the individuals involved in this successfully resolved transaction. Call it a hunch.

Posted By: <b>Scott Levy</b><p>This is exactly how a situation like this ought to be handled (and I guarantee that it will be worth it).<br /><br />It is so tempting to ignore, hide from, or try to push off blame on others for a costly mistake such as this one. But when Beckett did the right thing, right away, without hesitating or fighting, it makes me think that we might have a new "gold standard" grading company. I will now consider Beckett more seriously both for buying and for grading T206 cards within my own collection.<br /><br />

Posted By: <b>Tim</b><p>First off the way that this was handled by Beckett was top notch.<br /><br />This particular situation gives them a great opportunity to assert themselves as one of the more reputable companies in a business that isn't seen as very reputable at times.<br /><br />I know it's an uphill climb for Beckett but would love to see this and other things to follow set new trends in trust in the grading business. <br /><br />
