Posted By: Jodi Birkholm
Although this partially falls into "Pre-War", Jim and others might get some enoyment out of those Crown sets issued in the early 1990's. They attempted to create a card for every player who ever played on certain teams, such as the Dodgers and Orioles. Many players have their only card in these sets. What's funny is that some players were so obscure that a photo of them could not be found, so they still don't have cards.

Posted By: Frank Wakefield
Hey Jim,

There are a bunch of cards that fit the description you mention.

In addition to Upp, my favorite of that description...

A famous one would be Grover Lowdermilk in T207. Kurt Hageman only appears in that set, too.

Several guys in N172 are only in that set.

I think John O'Neill is only in the 1947 Signal Gas cards.
Bill Lattimore, Ray Ryan, and Pete O'Brien might are only in T206, and I suspect there are others.
John Oliver is only in the E270 Colgans set.

I think Max Butcher is only in 1940 Playball, even though he pitched about 10 years. Atwood in that set isn't on any other cards, I think.

Lots of the guys in T210 are on their only card, I'd guess at least 400 of them would fit that bill.

I'm sure there are many 19th century cards that would be the player's only one, and there are more in the Playballs and 1952 Topps. But I don't study those as much. Probably true for ZeeNuts, too.

Getting the Beckett book they mention above isn't a bad idea, but if you get one don't think it infallible. It has mistakes.

And guys, if the question had been "what book is out there that would help me identify players who appear only on one card?", then your posts would have been responsive and helpful.

I guess realistically I should have simply answered "Yes", 'cause I could tell him about Jerry Upp... you guys should have just said 'no' or not posted.

One of the photos was inexplicably discovered in the archives of the University of Western Ontario here in London. They're a very educational series of sets.

Someone should make a note of that

Posted By: Frank Wakefield
Dave "Highpockets" Gregg pitched in one game on June 15, 1913. In one inning he hit a batter and gave up two hits, allowing two runs to score. That was his only major league appearance. One game for Cleveland.

Dave is seen on the T200 Fatima cards, which realistically doesn't fit the definition of this thread, since he's on the small Fatimas and the T200 premiums. Dave stands in the middle of the back row, between his brother Vean Gregg and Cy Falkenberg.

Posted By: Jodi Birkholm
I'd have to think that the T210 red borders (that's the right numerical designation, isn't it?) would contain a litany of such cards. Is that considered more of a minor league set, though? It's a mixture if I remember right.

Posted By: Frank Wakefield
The red border Old Mill tobacco cards, the T210s, are 8 series of cards depicting minor league players. A bunch of them made it to the major leagues. I'd think well over half did not. Current count is 640 for the set. And I agree, lots of the T210 subjects are on their only card.

Posted By: Jodi Birkholm
I always did like that set. If I ever were to start collecting cards again, I'd probably go after those. Posted By: Bob
An interesting question might be which card containing a player who only appears on one card is the most expensive? Lowdermilk or I. Lewis in the T207 set come to mind, maybe Ward Miller?

Archive
06-08-2008, 01:51 PM
Posted By: Jodi Birkholm
I thought of Lowdermilk before I read your next sentence. Of course, for the most part, if it's the player's only card, you have to take into account some sort of rarity factor, otherwise it would have been assigned to the land of commons. The Ramly Murnane is one exception.

You have to wonder what an Eddie Gaedel rookie card would have been worth had it been printed at the time.

Archive
06-08-2008, 02:54 PM
Posted By: Frank Wakefield
I'd think Lowdermilk's T207 card would be the toughest...

Or maybe Fred McMullin's Zee-Nut card.

Fred Linke, a pitcher for Cleveland and the St. Louis Browns, is only in M116 I think. He pitched in 25 games.
