Posted By: Ed Hans
Forgive the ignorance of a relative newbie, but when someone posts a WTB for a specific card(s), and another board member (or two) take the trouble to find that card, scan it and post it with a fixed sell price, does the original poster owe that respondent a reply (yea, nay, or I'll think about it)?

Posted By: Matt
Ed - Yes - you deserve a response.
Maybe the original poster didn't see your response if it was just posted in the thread and not emailed?

Posted By: Tim Newcomb
Ed,

That has happened to me multiple times-- it's exasperating to go to that trouble and then get no reply at all. If the card you posted was in a different thread weeks later, you might figure the person looking for the card didn't see the post, but in the same thread, you have to assume he saw it, and should absolutely reply.

Bottom line: I remember the names of the people who didn't reply to my offers, and I'll hesitate to deal with them in the future.

Posted By: T206Collector
I think responses to B/S/T threads should be "E-mail sent" followed by an actual sent e-mail. That covers you on both possible communication fronts. No response to either would be inappropriate.

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Visit http://www.t206collector.com to see signed pre-war card galleries, articles, my blog, my collection and more!

Posted By: leon
While there are no written rules I would expect folks to give a polite answer back if you go the trouble of trying to help....common courtesy imo....

Posted By: Dan Bretta
It is my opinion that there is a HUGE lack of etiquette shown on the B/S/T as of recent.

Posted By: Bob Pomilla
Is there any question? It would be the mannerly thing to do, of course, assuming he was aware of it.

Posted By: Rob Ray
Agreed...Someone asked about several NM-mint vintage cards I had posted in BST. I quickly emailed F/B scans, and happily the buyer agreed to buy at my (more than fair) price.
I asked for the buyers' name and address so I could prepare insurance label and package to go out...upon which I didnt hear back from him for about a week.
I finally emailed the buyer, who told me he couldnt pay my price due to personal reasons. He offered less money. Again, this was many days later after I thought it was a done deal.
NO harm done, but if someone CAN'T afford the price listed, they should say that right off the bat,so the seller can either begin haggling...or search for a buyer elsewhere.
It's what I would have done.

Posted By: Ed Hans
Thanks for the replies. I did post it directly in the original thread. I did not email him directly. Of course, I can't say for certain that he has seen it, but he has posted on other threads since I posted on his B/S/T thread. I like to think that I would have had the courtesy to respond (even to say no thanks) if I had posted the WTB.

Posted By: Dan Bretta
Hey Ed, I actually sometimes forget that I've posted something on the B/S/T so it's possible that if you didn't email the poster that he didn't see it.

Posted By: Rob D.
Ed,

Without commenting on the specifics of your situation, I did have an instance of posting a WTB, and someone posted a reply on the original thread but didn't send me an e-mail. My original post got buried 7-8 deep pretty quickly, and it was a few days later until I happened -- by accident -- to see his response. I felt badly that it took me that long to respond (and a deal was struck) because no doubt the responder was wondering why I didn't get back to him. But I simply didn't see his offer for a few days (and I look at the B/S/T board a lot).

Just something to consider.

Good luck,

Rob

Posted By: Dan Bretta
In my case I posted something on the B/S/T and didn't get any emails about it, and probably about a week or so later I went to put something else on the B/S/T and saw that someone posted they would take it almost immediately. They never emailed me, but it was all good as the deal worked out...the other party assumed it was already sold when they didn't hear back from me.

I should probably check the B/S/T more often.

Posted By: leon
As you well know not everyone is courteous. It would be nice to think of our collecting family as all being nice and courteous......then I go back to "once upon a time"

Posted By: John S
I always contact a seller once my item has arrived and ask for the same courtesy in return...happens about 50% of the time. I also provide updates such as payment received and item shipped. It literally takes a half minute to send these emails.

Posted By: andy becker
i appreciate the BST and i very much want to thank everyone with whom i've bought or sold items to using the BST.

requesting scans or asking questions are certainly a buyer's option, but PLEASE just email a polite (or rude ) response.

i agree with dan, it has gotten much worse as of late.

Posted By: Tim
Also being a newbie I'm a little paranoid. I put up a WTB last week and arranged to get one of the cards from another seller a few days later. I haven't gotten the card yet, but someone else posted a similar card to what I was looking for in another thread do I need to let him know or post in my thread that I have arranged for one of them? I was thinking I would wait until I got the card and then post in my original that I am now only looking for the other (Who knows what can happen in transit). Any advice?

Posted By: leon
If you haven't received the card yet, and you made a deal, then you really should go through with it. If the card you already bought is just in transit, and you do another deal before you get it for the same type card...only to have to return the first one; You might end up getting a bad reputation, or worse. Have you tried contacting the seller?

Yes, you should post changes in your wants when they change and you have posted them on the board recently. All of this is just common courtesy and this kind of situation might be what others are a little chapped about lately. This might not be a case here but it sort of sounds like one.- Folks not being courteous...
...Feel free to ask questions about dealings or email me and I will try to help you.....I get emails fairly frequently and help when I can.....Treat others as you want to be treated.....(sorry for that 'ole line)..regards

Posted By: Tim
Leon-
Thanks for taking the time to post- I probably wasn't clear before-
I contacted a seller in a separate thread and paid for the card about an hour later - I just haven't updated the original want post I placed(that no one has e-mailed or responded to) to indicate I don't need the card because it's not in my hands yet. So I guess my question is as a newbie if I list a want post and someone else lists a sell post am I wrong for not contacting them? I'm just new to the board and didn't know if I should change my wants even without having the physical posession of the card or not? I agree totally that you should never back down - if you ask for it you better be prepared to get it. So far every dealing has been exceptional on the board ...I've been watching it for a year but just jumped in for the first time last month because of the honesty on the board!!! Kudos to all ...hope to get a rep and collection like all of yours in the future!

Posted By: Jason L
I figure this is directed at me, which is fair, as it is probably regarding my inquiry for the Dummy Taylor and Gandil cards over in the tobacco section.

True, I did not go back to my thread terribly promptly, and then I forgot to respond for a couple days after I did see it.

I sent you an email tonight as I do have an interest in one card.

Sorry for the accidental lapse. completey unintential and not meant to be rude.
Jason L

Posted By: Martin Neal
I responded to a WTB thread last week and arranged a deal with the buyer at his price (which was close to what I wanted.) In an email, he asked me to send him a Paypal invoice and he would get the funds to me that day. I responded that I have never generated an invoice with Paypal except when it was done automatically through ebay. I gave him my Paypal address and said I would get his address from that and send his card. I have bought and sold on the BST this way many times. I have not heard a word since. Did he find a better deal, or was he uncomfortable with the arrangement? I don't know, but it was a little irritating. I really don't care whether I sell the cards or not, it just happened that some cards he needed were ones that I could part with. What really bothers me is his lack of manners.

Posted By: Ed Hans
Jason,
No apology is necessary. From the replies above, I can see that I made a few mistakes myself. First, I should have emailed you directly. And second, I probably should have given you more time to check your thread. They do seem to slide down the page pretty quickly. I turned in early last night, and have not seen your email yet. I will reply as soon as I get home from work tonight. Thank you for responding, and thanks to all who have posted in this thread.

Ed

Posted By: leon
First of all thanks to the folks who will now just put "sold" or "not for sale anymore" in their BST listings instead of editing everything out and putting "DELETE" there. As in the auction house psychology thread I think there is something to seeing how much "action" really goes on there. It's quite a bit. I guess the 0%/0% strategy works pretty well ......

On this new request I would ask folks to not "bump" their thread when something is either sold, traded or not for sale anymore and instead just edit it IF there is nothing else left for sale/WTB or trade in that thread. There is really no need to bump a thread if it's no longer relevent and it makes the ones that are still valid be moved down unnecessarily....sometimes causing a "bump" war to ensue....Just some common courtesy to keep sanity and some form of organization over there. Thanks to all.....
