Posted By: Adam
Ok, now that Barry's auction has closed --- am I the only one surprised by the T206 Red Hindu pricing? I bid on one of them and not only did I lose, I was blown out of the water.

Is a PSA 2 HOFer with a red hindu back really a 3k card???

Edited to add: I hope the 2 red hindus went to people on the board, they are great cards . . . heck, I wish they had gone to me, had I not been so cheap.

Edited again to add links:

<a href="http://www.sloateauction.com/LotDetail.aspx?lotid=444</a" target="_new" rel="nofollow">http://www.sloateauction.com/LotDetail.aspx?lotid=444</a>

<a href="http://www.sloateauction.com/LotDetail.aspx?lotid=465</a" target="_new" rel="nofollow">http://www.sloateauction.com/LotDetail.aspx?lotid=465</a>

Posted By: Jim Dale
As noted in a thread a few weeks ago the Red Hindu is just "hot" right now. The SGC cards in the big auction a few weeks ago went for $3k and $4k if I'm not mistaken...there is one in ebay (GAI grade) for $2,500 right now. A beater went through ebay last week. Its interesting watching them - I wonder if its a temporary or permanent thing?

Posted By: Adam
So is it fare to say they are "red" hot? (That's a horrible attempt at humor.)

Posted By: MVSNYC
i have been discussing this very topic with a few fellow T206 back experts...between these 2 in Barry's auction, and a few in REA...we honestly are baffled. it is a rare back, don't get me wrong, but nowhere near as tuff as Drum, and they have all of a sudden commanded such prices.

i personally think there has been a lot of "overbidding" going on (i.e. people getting excited and all wrapped-up in the auction buzz, and tend to bid more on items then they're worth). i have no other explanation for it.

Lenox (Brown) - Factory 30 - District 2 - State NY
7. Drum - Series 350- Factory 25 - District 2 - State VA
8. Uzit - Factory 30 - District 2 - State NY
9. Hindu (Red) - Factory 649 - District 1 - State NY
10. Piedmont - Series 350-460 - Factory 42 - District 4 - State NC
============
and I assume that is accurate?

If so there is a HUGE disconnect between #9 and #10 on that list.

Piedmont - Series 350-460 - Factory 42 - District 4 - State NC

Here are the top 10 on T206museum.com

Given that 1-4 and 6 are virtually impossible and #5 is just a series variation, Red Hindu is right up there with Drum and Uzit. As a moderate back collector, my goal was to have one of each brand and one example of each color variation. I have a few red Hindus. No brown old mill or brown lenox and I doubt I ever will. I appreciate the series and factory buffs, but those never did it for me. So if it is just brands and colors, Red Hindu is high on the list. Maybe I am the only one who thinks this way about T206 backs, but if there are others, that might explain it.

Or maybe Ted is competing with somebody over an all Hindu set, which we all know means red Hindus too since I believe there were no card printed with BOTH red and brown Hindu backs.
JimB

Posted By: Jamie
The card is possibly trimmed... but according to what everyone is saying about how high the market is now... I was wondering what this would be worth right now... Card is in great condition.. except for possible trim and there is the number 381 in red ink on the back so its marked.. any ideas on a value for this card? thanks

Jamie

Posted By: Jim Dale
If that were my Red Hindu in this market I'd send it to SGC for an "A" grade and encasement. After that the value is set by what someone is willing to pay..as one hopeful of putting together a 36 card back set it would be worth quite a bit - but I would personally avoide it unless the price seemed so low as none of my backs have any paper loss or marks (so far).

Posted By: scott levy
It used to be that psa 1 red hindus were worth $500 and that the price was stable at that. Based on that figure I'd say 300. But you cannot ignore the reality that red hindus are HOT right now. I'd guess that it would go for 700+ if you auctioned it today...just a guess though.

Regards,
Scott

Posted By: Marc S.
Wes:

Yes, Hunt offered something like 15-20 Drum cards about 6-9 months ago. Now, most of them were trimmed...but they nonetheless were a number of Drum cards hitting the market, new to the hobby, all at once...including a Cobb. Also -- since Drum backs can potentially be found with more players than either Uzit or Red Hindu, I think it is perhaps slightly easier than once thought.

In my years of back collecting, I've been able to add 3 Philadelphia Phillies with Drum backs (and know where another 2-3 are), 2 Uzit Phillies (both about 7 years ago), and only one Red Hindu Phillie, which came via Art M. via England about six years ago. The only other Red Hindu Phillie I've seen is a Doolan batting that was offered in a lot with 3 Drums in REA or some other auction house about 2-3 years ago.

Marc
