Posted By: MikePugeda
Was at a small, local card show going through a junk box (everthing $1.00), the dealer had some strip cards and this was in with them. Can anyone identify the player and the issue?

At first I thought it was clipped from a '35 Goudey 4-in-1 but there is no name, no color border, and it is blank backed. It is thick stock and does appear to be cut from something, but what?

Thanks in advance,

Mike

Posted By: brianp
I have never seen any card issue like this before, but if I were to guess this looks like Lee Meadows, a bespectacled MLB pitcher in the twenties.

Brian

Posted By: scgaynor
I think that it is 1/4 of one of those cards that came in a childs playset, but I can't remember the exact designation (UNC something).

Scott

Posted By: MikePugeda
Brock and Steve,

I originally thought it might be Goudey 4-in-1, but ruled that out because:

1. It is blank back
2. No name on front
3. Border is white

It is close in size to what 1/4 of a '35 Goudey would be though.

Scott,

So you think it is definitely only part of a whole card?

Mike

Posted By: Chris Counts
The dot pattern makes it look like a trimmed down 1920s strip card ... I just checked the Old Cardboard site and there are at least three sets from 1920 and 1921 where the artwork looks very similar. I also found a picture of Lee Meadows and it looks like a dead ringer for him ... Meadows' career peaked during those years ...

Posted By: scgaynor
The card that I am thinking of had four players on one card and was issued in a playset. I had a card with Babe Ruth on it a few years ago and the artwork was similar. I don't know if the set has ever really been checklisted, and the origin was unknown until one of the playsets was in an auction somewhere. There was some discussion on the board about it at the time. Sorry to be so vague.

scott

Posted By: MikePugeda
Scott,

I think I know the issue you are talking about. Are you referring to the 4-in-1 that had Babe Ruth in follow through and 2 other HOF'ers (w/ another unidentified player)? It does look very similar to that particular card, but if memory serves correct, wasn't that card borderless?

Mike
