Posted By: <b>chris bland</b><p>Not sure about the others, but you are way low on the last two Dave. It wouldnt surprise me if an SGC40 D355 got over 10x what you quote, assuming it could be found. I have never seen one for sale.

Posted By: <b>Ed Hans</b><p>Agree with most responses here. About a year and a half ago a small group (12-16 cards) of D380's surfaced on eBay. They were all 1s, with varying degrees of back damage, paper loss, tape stains, and creasing. The worst of them fetched about $800 each, while the "best" went for about $2,600 each. They all went to one buyer (who, by the way, could also be considered one of the "Whales"). That should make 3s about $4K each. It'll be interesting to see how the large group in REA does, especially those awesome major league subjects. I suspect there will be multiple board members bidding on them. I know they're way out of my price range.

Posted By: <b>leon</b><p>On these scarcer issues, such as D380, I don't think the difference in prices between a 2 and a 3, or a 3 and a 4, are very different vis a vis the prices they bring. Most folks that collect true scarcity, as opposed to condition scarcity setsm don't care that much if something is a 2,3 or 4......I know for sure that the whale you spoke of is not condition sensitive at all. At least he wasn't when he won a Just So from me on ebay several years ago as it had a heavy crease through his head. I know for the few sets I collect I don't care if I get a 2 or a 3 or a 4 and would actually prefer a lower grade one if it's less expensive and presentable.....regards

Clearly there must be some incremental value between a 1 with tape stains and back damage and a clean 3. A couple of those cards went for about $2,600. The REA lots should be a good barometer. Posted By: <b>Anthony S.</b><p>I kinda hate to bring this up, but I am curious, which always trumps hate for me.<br /><br />If the Niagara Baking back stamp increases the value of what would otherwise be an E101 by a factor of 10 to 20 or Lord knows how much, what's to keep an enterprising but felonious graphic designer --- think Marketkingman, but with ingenuity and talent --- from attaining access to one legitimate specimen (that's obviously the tough part) and then creating an identical stamp? Obviously forgers know about old inks and grading companies see so few of these cards.<br /><br /><br />edited to add: curious doesn't really always trump hate for me. don't cross me. and don't call me Francis.

Posted By: <b>Leon</b><p>Ed- That sort of proves the point. I don't think you would have seen any higher prices if they had been vg. The buyer of all of those (I think it was all but it was at least most) is not condition sensitive, as I said earlier when referencing the Just So with the Frankenstein crease down the whole card right through his face. I think he, like many other old time set collectors, are completists first and condition sensitive far less. If he needs the ones in REA I would expect them to go fairly high too. I understand it takes 2 to Tango but if he needs them and there is another strong bidder it will be strong prices. He is a large whale many times.... We shall see. <br /><br />Anthony- ssssshhhh....No doubt they could do it but I doubt it would be real easy. Plus I know when I see the overprint cards I put my "BS alert" senses on and in high mode.......and look much harder at the card. I can't say I have seen any overprints, besides some Johnson Confectionery (sorry AL) that I understand were stamped in the 80's illigetimately, trying to be pawned off as real. Actually I have only heard these Johnson overprint stories from very reliable sources but have not seen them myself. I think they were in green but could be wrong. Regards
