Posted By: Anthony N.
I just got a call from Zach Rice, and I'm sorry to report that his dad, Max, has passed away this evening.
If anyone has had the good fortune to meet Max at the National the past few years you are aware of the depth of the loss. Max, despite being confined to a wheelchair with MS, always had an incredible sense of humour of his situation, and many of us found his outlook on life truly inspirational.
Zach has taken care of Max (and vice versa) for many years, and despite still being a teenager shows maturity well beyond his chronological age. The two of them together were a pleasure to be around, and their relationship was the envy of many fathers and sons.
Zach asked me to put a post up here to let everyone know that he's going to be out of the loop for a few days as he deals with arrangements and the arrival of his extended family. He's really an amazing kid, and Max was very proud of him, as are those of us that know him. I think it's a testament to his character that he called me tonite to ask to spread the word that he'll need a few extra days before being able to fulfill his obligations in any pending transactions.
Please join me in expressing our deepest condolences to Zach and the Rice family.

Posted By: Ryan Christoff
This is absolutely devastating news. Max was one of my all-time favorite people. Such a good man. Such a good father. If I can be half the man he was and half the father to my son that he was to his, I will consider my life successful.

This almost makes me not even want to bother going to the National this year.

Max literally made me cry at last year's National by saying some of the nicest and most meaningful things anyone has ever said to me.

ANYTHING you need, Zach, I'm here.

With great sadness,

-Ryan

Posted By: Bill Cornell
Awful news. I just booked my trip yesterday to the National and was looking forward to seeing Zach and Max for the fifth straight year. Max was a great guy - terrific sense of humor and a proud dad. I had a long chat with him just last year about technology and we both laughed a lot. I'm really sad about this, most of all because Zach's a friend.

Might be a good place to put in a link to the MS Society. They're fighting a terrible disease, one that we can all help to overcome.

Bill

Not sure why but I buddied up with Zach and Max right away. I believe I remember making room for them a few times at our table at breakfast. Hang in there Zach. Our prayers are with you. Your dad will be sorely missed by all of us. Let us (and me personally) know if if there is anything at all we can do for you.....take care my friend....leon

Posted By: Bob C
Zach please accept my sincerest regrets. My empathy is especially personal as I had a very close relative who suffered over thirty years from this terrible disease. Her recent passing was a blessing to escape her suffering but terribly hard on our family to see her go.
It is also a testament to your father that he raised such a good son who looked after him during his times of need.
I donate to the MS Society often and will make a donation in your father’s name.
Regards,
Bob Craik
Posted By: Bruce Babcock
Very sad news. Devastating. I met Zach and Max at the National at Anaheim in 2006. Great people. So great to see a father and son spending time together, sharing the joy of collecting. Most people would have found Max's condition too daunting to undertake such a trip. It not even an issue for Max. It's clear that no obstacle would keep them apart. Zach, our thoughts are with you.
