Posted By: Phil Garry
I am hoping that someone here can identify the year or approximate time frame of this photo of the Detroit Tigers. Hughie Jennings & Sam Crawford are pictured but I believe Ty Cobb is not. My main interest is to find out if Harry Heilmann is included somewhere on the photo.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Here is another larger scan of the center of the photo (I don't think Cobb is in there)

Another larger scan of the right side of the photo

Here is a larger scan of the left side of the photo

Thanks

Posted By: Jodi Birkholm
This sounds like it's up Dan's alley.

I notice that this pic suffers from moisture-induced damage, giving it that bronzed effect. Does anyone (COUGH!--Seventeen edits--COUGH! ) know if there is a way to restore that kind of damage? I have a gorgeous oversized George Burke 11X14 photo signed by Bill Klem that would really benefit from this type of restoration.

EDITED TO EDIT THE WORD "EDIT"!

Posted By: Steve Murray
Looks like you have George Mullin, back row, far left, who played for Detroit through 1913. So for me that's the latest date to put on it.

Posted By: Joe D.
but I am glad to see the dog is in the photo (thanks for the larger scans).

And the hats on those two ladies are awesome - I wonder if I purchased a hat like that for my wife if she would wear it...... looks like the ladies are enjoying vanilla ice-cream cones.

Posted By: Dan Bretta
It has to be between 1907 and 1910. Jennings first year with Detroit is 1907 and I see both Ed Killian and Matty McIntyre in there so the latest it can be is 1910. Cobb must have missed the team photo because he should be in there, but he is not.

Posted By: Dan Bretta
It's possible this is from Spring Training as there are 30 guys dressed - and no Cobb.

Posted By: Phil Garry
Thanks for the help guys/gals. It appears that you answered my question, Harry Heilmann must not be part of the photo since he only played briefly with Detroit in 1914 and then did not start regular duty until 1916.

Posted By: Cashews
hmm spring training is an interesting idea and probably right. i wonder if the dark and white caps correspond to the players on the squad and those trying to make the team.

Posted By: Dan Bretta
It's a fantastic photo - players I recognize are Davy Jones, Sam Crawford, Ed Killian, Matty McIntyre, Boss Schmidt, Hugh Jennings (mgr), Jim Delahanty and some others I just know that I recognize, but can't place a name.

I think almost certainly this photo is from spring training 1910. There is no Germany Schaeffer whose last year with Detroit is 1909, and it includes Delahanty whose first year with Detroit is 1909, but he didn't start the year with Detroit. Throw in McIntyre and Killian who both played their final year with Detroit in 1910 and it pretty much narrows this photo to spring 1910.

Posted By: Jason L
top row, immediately under and to our right of the ladies with the hats and ice cream cones? white hat, white uniform...he certainly looks like the closest resemblance...but that means the guy to the left of him would be Crawford, right, and for those two to be standing next to each other wouldn't make sense, right?

incredible photo!
Posted By: Dan Bretta
Cobb and Crawford were not pals, but there was no acrimony like that between Cobb and McIntyre. In later years Ty Cobb pushed very hard for Sam Crawford's induction into the Hall of Fame.

Posted By: Dennis Mosley
I believe I read in Mcgraws book that Cobb usually showed up late for spring training that could explain the reason for him not being in the photo, the Giants trained in Marlin Tx, from 1908-1918, the Tigers trained at Waxahachie Tx, both of these towns are near Dallas. Thanks. Dennis. Sorry I forgot Great Photo.

Posted By: Rhett Yeakley
Sitting in front row next to Jennings (to his left, our right) is Tom Jones. He started with Detroit at the end of 1909 and was with them for the 1910 season, then in 1911 he was in the minors. His presence dates the team to either late 1909 or during the 1910 season. As this is probably some kind of training photo I concur with Dan Bretta that this photo is a 1910 piece.
-Rhett

Posted By: Phil Garry
B & E Collectibles is the owner of the photo. I first saw it available for sale at their table at the White Plains show last weekend. My main purpose for inquiring was to look for a vintage item picturing Harry Heilmann, which this photo did not. Thus, they ended up listing it for sale on ebay.
