Question regarding Strip cards....

Posted By: <b>Frank Wakefield</b><p>When I first encountered strip cards I disliked them for the reasons Bobby stated, plus they are of an odd, usually smaller size.<br /><br /><br />Then, as my collecting progressed to trying to get cards of various players (a collection strategy based upon the players and the history of the game; not on sets, value, or set registries and the like), it seemed that my best shot at getting cards of some players was by considering strip cards. My first one was a W551, I think. Then a W514. Then more W514s, some W511s, and W515s. These were cards collected by kids. These were neat little bits of the history of the game. I developed an appreciation for them. They fill a bit of a gap there between the tobacco cards of pre WWI and the depression era gum cards.<br /><br />Anyone who currently dislikes their strip cards for the reasons Bobby set out should please email me... if the price is affordable I'll adopt and care for your little strip cards.... provide them with a good, stable home.

Posted By: <b>Brian C.</b><p>Few would call them the centerpiece of their collection, but what strip cards -- particularly W515's -- have going for them are vivid art deco-like colors, a nice player selection, and affordability. They also look interesting, this despite one unfortunate pose of Babe Ruth which makes him look like a geisha (I call it his "Geisha Ruth" card). Also, think about the number of W515 sets you've seen compared to the number of T206 sets and it should give you some idea about how difficult some of these paper-stock sets are to complete.

They generally won't cost you an arm and a leg although there are some that get into 4 figure money....I think too that the stereotypical thinking of a strip card might be like a W515, W560 etc....I think it's quite the contrary in terms of what I enjoy collecting......(I do still like the W515, W560 etc.. but not as much as others)<br /><br /><img src="http://luckeycards.com/pwuncx5.jpg"><br /><img src="http://luckeycards.com/pwunc1916bigheadmaster.jpg">

Posted By: <b>Mark L</b><p>They're not all cartoonish. W514's sometimes resemble the players. I, for one, don't share the prejudice against the strip cards with photos. It's good that you can still get key players from w-575-1 or W502 without spending much.
