New to T206

I have read Scot Readers eBook and browse the forums as much as possible for good information.<br /><br />My question is, is there any reading other than the above mentioned anyone could recommend to me?<br /><br />Any help would be greatly appreciated.<br />

Posted By: <b>fkw</b><p>Since T206 is usually a starting point for a new vintage collector, you may want to pick up The Encyclopedia of Baseball Cards (Lew Lipset), it has good descriptions, history, and checklists of many of the other N, E, and T sets.

Posted By: <b>robert a</b><p>Hi Tim,<br /><br />I think Scot's research is something that you'll continue to go back to as you progress through different stages of T206 collecting. Similar to Bill Heitman's "The Monster," Scot's book has been very helpful for identifying what backs are possible with each front. I believe that's important for a new collector. <br /><br />On this board certain folks are still updating, negating, and confirming past theories and there continues to be discussion about the printing process, color errors, variations, advertising, etc. If you do some extensive searching here by using the "match" option you can find some pretty good discussion.<br /><br />Good luck with T206.<br /><br />Rob<br /><br />

You’re 100% correct, I’m new to vintage cards all together and have started with the T206’s after a lot of research into what it was I wanted to do. I have set my goal at the T206 HOF set and figured it would either end or grow from there.<br /><br />What I’m really trying to get into is the nuisances of these cards.<br /><br />For example (and forgive my ignorance) is staining more prevalent on Polar Bear cards due to how the cards were packed with a certain type of tobacco? Are there flaws that are seen generally by collectors as more acceptable than others, creases, diamond cut, paper lose, scuffing, staining, marking, etc. than some others?<br /><br />I’m just trying to become as absolutely educated as possible about what I am buying. I know it can’t all be learned in a day and I will surely pay some price for ignorance at some point, but anything that helps would be great.<br />

Posted By: <b>Craig W</b><p>Hi Tim, Welcome to "The Monster"!<br /><br />For new vintage collectors, I'd suggest first buying a few commoners of different grades (example: an SGC 10, a PSA 4, and a raw VG). This will help you get an idea of the quality of card you'll be getting before you launch into the more expensive HOFers.

I know from experience that I have learned alot from the other members in just the few months that I've been here. If you have any questions feel free to ask. <br /><br />Not sure if anyone answered your question about Polar Bear backs yet, but yes they tend to have more staining than the other T206 backs.<br /><br />Hope this helps,<br />Jantz

Posted By: <b>Frank Wakefield</b><p>Tim, I must repeat what fkw posted...<br /><br />Get yourself The Encyclopedia of Baseball Cards, volume 3, Twentieth Century Tobacco Cards, by Lew Lipset.<br /><br />Reiterating what I posted elsewhere last night, "While the prices are dated, the information that Mr. Lipset sets out leaves modern catalogs in the dust. We owe him a debt of gratitude for putting this Encyclopedia, as well as his other two, together and publishing them."<br /><br />Scot's work is great, and not very old. Mr. Lipset's works remain valuable for anyone wanting to understand the various issues.<br /><br />
