PSA numbering

Posted By: <b>Dave Haas</b><p>I just received 2 submissions back from PSA and their certification numbers were 02254448/49. I thought PSA's cert's were sequential with Wagner being #1 and proceeding up from there to 12+ million today. Why are they issuing cert's in the 2 million range? Are certification numbers reissued if someone notifies them that a card has been crossed over?

Posted By: <b>Anthony N.</b><p>They have jumped around a bit. I think the ones starting with a 5 were to designate cards graded on site, but not positive. A couple of years ago everything was coming back starting with 3, before there numbers starting with 9 were common.<br />A year or so ago there was a lot of talk on the CU board about certs starting with 0 selling for less because of the perception they were graded early on with laxer standards. As soon as this started appearing in ebay auctions and seemed to gain acceptance PSA started issuing certs starting in 0 again to circumvent the stigma.<br /><br />

Posted By: <b>Marc S.</b><p>of 600,000 slabs?<br /><br />Yes, the 12MM number is directionally accurate. PSA used to make a point of making every millionth graded card a "significant" one....much like Topps used to assign start players to card numbers ending in 00, 25, or 50.

A year or so ago, they touted a '54 common which got a PSA 10 as their 10 millionth graded card.<br /><br />PSA's numbering system is all over the boards. I have cards with a cert # starting with 9, many starting with 3, etc. So they are not all sequentially numbered. <br /><br />There is a theory out there that the first 3 digits are related to who actually does the grading, but PSA has rebuffed that, so the pattern remains a mystery.
