You could find '89 Upper Deck Griffey's till the cows came home, but no green Cobbies. Then in 2001, I discovered a wonderful thing called eBay. Posted By: <b>Jantz</b><p>My first pre-war purchase was a 34-36 Diamond Star of Rick Ferrell which I sold a few years later. I then decided to pick up a T206 for my collection. After searching Ebay for some time I won a PSA 5 Nap Rucker (throwing) and when the card arrived in the mail I was stunned. That pretty much did it for me. I had to have more. I bought the three cards for $10 total in 1977. I no longer have the exact cards, but I do have examples of each in PSA 4.<br /><br /><br />Steve

Around the same time I purchased goudey reprints of a bunch of hofers for $20 that I thought were real (luckily I didn't trade for them). My first pre-wwi vintage was a t206 bradley w/ bat for $18 (in '96 or so) that would sell for about that today. I'll insert scans later.

Up until that point, I was strictly a memorabilia collector. I used to have tons of old wooden tennis rackets, old gloves, bats, catcher masks, and even had two early inflatable chest protectors. Eventually, I decided cards would make for a better display and take up less room. Of couse, I now have 4 display cases of cards. I still have a few old baseballs, several spider masks,a Balfour baseball trophy, and and an awesome D&M cloth catcher's mitt.<br /><br />Patrick

Posted By: <b>1880nonsports</b><p>visiting north carolina I wandered into a great collectibles store. I bought a 1955 Jackie Robinson in near mint that graded out as ex/mt at "book" fror NM. Dealer was so happy he wouldn't let me out of his store. I was so happy I didn't want to leave. I got it graded and I still have it as my sole post 1920 card.... I realized within a short time I wanted VINTAGE vintage. My first purchase (1993?) from a Rich Galasso auction - an N43 Fogarty. He called it excellent to mint - it's a solid vg/x thank god - and still sitting on my shelf. I have 44 of the set - it's been 10+ years - and regret passing so often on the boxing cards - as they're becoming even more cost prohibitive. It's been a fun ride and I fear I will be one of those people that does this until they bury me - unless the hobby slowly fades away in the future without the investors to push the sellers to get the material due to something like a Wagner controversy or .25 grades - or GASP - eBay goes away and I would have to pound the pavement again for "stuff" - hard to do in Southern FLA.............. I'll post a scan when time permits.
