Newbie with 2 questions

Posted By: <b>Steve</b><p>I have a vintage collection that has accumulated over a long period of time as well as from different sellers. I purchased a large collection 2 years ago of vintage stuff between 1907 and 1950. In this collection, which came from the Pittsburgh area, were many cards I am not familiar with. The collection belongs to William F Stalker, and was very Pirate heavy. I knew the sellers well and new the collection was real. It also had a Wagner Auto on a 5x7 that I took to the nationals and had authenticated by PSA. He had many various wagners including a 1910 tip top bread complete set, countless Coligan Chip cards with about 10-15 wagners. 100's of W-555 with 10-15 wagner's. There were many E97 B&W proofs with a real nice Young. Bad news is the cards were displayed on black felt paper and were in binders and other display boards. I know this hurts the value but im not really worried about the value I jut like the cards. I can’t however find many of the cards in the sports collectors digest. Nor have I separated some of the cards from the black felt. any ideas on how to preserve these cards for my son. Second question I stopped at an old card shop the other day and the owner had a 1928 George Babe Ruth Candy Co. set. I know these cards are highly counterfeited. I did some research online and learned a few of the obvious fake's. But to me the numbers look good, the cards are in vg-fair condition and he was asking 1200. I am interested in a set like this but am very skeptical after reading some Internet sites. Thanks for your help in advance.

I collect the tip top bread set from 1947 and I have thought about going for the 1910 set next. How great is that 1910 set? Posted By: <b>JK</b><p>I would check out www.oldcardboard.com - they have examples of many sets listed on their site.<br /><br />As for removal and preservation of the cards, they may be able to be soaked off but would like to see some scans of how they are currently attached to be sure. I was able to get all of these cards off without any damage and most graded well:<br /><br /><img src="http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e211/jkrasner2/1922CardsFront2.jpg"><br /><br />Im sure there are also posts on the topic of removing cards from scrap books if you do a search.

Posted By: <b>peter ullman</b><p>steve that sounds like an amazing collection you have there. can you post some pics??? depending on how the cards were mounted you may be able to remove them...but...as you say...leaving them intact is a great way to enjoy them...kinda takes you back to when bb cards weren't so valuable and people just enjoyed them for the pretty pictures!!!<br /><br />I might add that it's not terribly "fair" that one person has/needs so many Honusus!!(insert smiley face here)<br />pete ullman in mn

If you don't feel confident removing the cards yourself it would be a worthwhile investment to use the services of a paper conservator. I am sure there is at least one in your area. It sounds like a fabulous collection, especially with all those Wagner cards. 10-15 W555- that's the largest group I've ever heard of. Good luck, and keep posting questions on the board. You will get answers.<br /><br />Edited to add 10-15 Colgan's Chips cards too- amazing!

Posted By: <b>Rhett Yeakley</b><p>If the Colgans are pasted into the book, do not try to soak these as the ink on back is semi water soluble. If they are oversoaked the ink will come off, if care is taken with a very small amount of water minimal to no damage will be done. Posted By: <b>barrysloate</b><p>Other than the Colgan's Chips and the W555's, all the cards appear to be artistically die cut and laid out. While someone put together a beautiful album, those cut cards have minimal value. The album looks so nice, however, that I might just leave it intact.

Posted By: <b>Steve</b><p>Really nice artwork. Seems there's a disected Pirates team postcard in the collage. <br /><br />The Colgan's may be easily removed if the old glue is degraded enough. They tend to have a durable back.
