Posted By: Rob
I have two photos of Nap Rucker. The first is a recent purchase that I know is a M101-2 Sporting News Supplement, with the date September 16, 1909 on the front.

The second, however, I purchased a while ago thinking it was a M101-2, as thats what the auction listing said, and on the back of the photo it has a date written in pen "9/16/09". Can anyone identify what the 2nd photo really is?

Thanks!
Rob

Posted By: Patrick McMenemy
Hi Rob,

Very interesting. The player identifiication box looks very similar between the two supplements. Perhaps he had more than one supplement issued by the Sporting News? I'm guessing someone put the date on the back after seeing the date listed in a catalog.

I'm curious as to whether the bottom supplement might be trimmed? If so, the name of the company might have been lost with the alteration.

The Boston Post and Boston Herald also released supplements that look quite similar to the M101-2s as well.

Good luck with the identification.

Patrick

Posted By: Todd Schultz
According to Marc Okkonen's book on team uniforms, Brooklyn did not wear that logo/design on their arm until 1910, and the uniform depicted correpsonds to the 1913 squad. If he's right, this would not have been issued in 1909 as handwritten on the back. Also, the first 10 Sporting News premiums from 1909 had that white informational strip across the top, and after they started in July, each week is accounted for. I'm guessing it's a premium from some other source.

Posted By: Rob
thanks for all the info so far! He's not on the checklist for either Boston Herald or Sunday Post, and a quick scan of the oldcardboard.com "M" cards doesn't show any similar looking photos. And the checklists I've seen for Sporting News Supplements only has the one Rucker (from 9/16/09).

Thanks for any add'l info!
Rob

Posted By: Patrick McMenemy
I have a Chief Meyers Baseball Magazine poster, and it has his name at the bottom, but not in a box like: the M101-2s, Boston Sunday Post, Boston Herald, and Philadelphia Evening Times. I think you can rule out The Baseball Magazine. I think the key to identification is matching the player's name and box to another supplement with the same design. Perhaps a small regional newspaper issue.

Patrick

Posted By: Rob
Thanks everyone for your input so far! Very much appreciated.

I agree I don't think its a Baseball Magazine Poster, as my issue measures 9 7/8 tall x 8" wide.

Nap Rucker is listed as having a "Police Gazette" in 1913, according to:

http://www.oldcardboard.com/m/m128/m128list.asp

Does anyone have a Police Gazette from 1913? Perhaps they looked different that year than some of the other years?

I agree with what you said Patrick. It looks similar to both Boston Herald Supplements (of course its not that though, as they only issued Red Sox and Braves) and M101-2. Perhaps Brooklyn had a newspaper that issued supplements as well?

Thanks again guys!
Rob

Posted By: Rob
I received a couple of emails (thank you guys!). One confirmed its not from the Police Gazette, and the other said its a Brooklyn Eagle supplement and while very rare, its trimmed.

I found alot of info only about the Brooklyn Eagle newspaper, but couldn't find any information at all about the supplements. Anyone have any info on these? Are they by chance in Lipset's Encyclopedia? I purchased one a week ago online but it hasn't come in yet.

Thanks!
Rob

Posted By: martindl

While it is not the Police Gazette supplement, the image is identical to the 1913 Police Gazette issue i.e same photo, except that your image retains the stands and the person at left, whereas the Gazette only has Rucker. The Gazette issue has "copyright International News Service, New York" if that helps any.
