Posted By: <b>PC</b><p>Brad -- it's great that there is a card of your uncle, but it is a pricey card for two reasons: (1) it is the 1952 Topps set which is one of the most popular and actively collected Topps sets and (2) it is a "high number" card in the set, and the high numbers were short printed, hence, it is more scarce than cards in the other series in the set.<br /><br />You should have no trouble finding that card on eBay, but before bidding you should get comfortable with what a fair price might be (the current "buy-it-now" listed cards of your uncle on eBay seem pricey to me). Posted By: <b>PC</b><p>Brad: I don't know where you can pick that 1982 card up, but you might periodically run searches on eBay for it and the other cards listed above. I would search broadly, (e.g., "1982 Bowman" and "1952 extension"), because these reprints and "extension" cards are sometimes sold as sets, and you might miss it if you search only using his name. You might also Google the set name -- a dealer may have it advertised.<br /><br />Your uncle may also have a photo in one of the "picture packs" that fans could buy at the stadium. I think these started in the 40s, and continued throughout the 50s and 60s (maybe even later). These photos are pretty common on eBay. If you get hold of the Standard Catalouge of Baseball Cards, there is a section on "picture packs" which (if memory serves correctly) are sorted by team and year. Assuming there is a series for the team and year, maybe he's included with the 1951/1952/1953 Pirates or 1953/1954 Red Sox? (The picture packs are not completley catalougued, so just becase he is not listed in the catalogue does not necessarily mean there isn't a photo out there.) Again, searching for the photos on eBay by team and year might be useful, because these photos are often sold in groups or as complete packs and you would miss your uncle if you were searching only by name.

It makes sense that Topps would experiment in '52 with a technique they later used on the '53 set. The Merson image looks like a prototype for the '53 set. I'll bet the '53 artist (I can't recall his name but it's been mentioned on this forum before) created the Merson image ...

If you want a great head and shoulders shot, the Photo Pack is the way to go. <br /><br />He is also not shown in the 1950 Pittsburgh Photo Pack list (the only one in the 2007 Standard Catalog) nor with the listed Pirates Postcards.
