Posted By: leon
That's right folks....another contest for December. The last one was a tricky devil but I am very happy, with a little prodding, Matt finally got it.....This one won't be so tricky. Closest to the final price (no other costs included) wins. In event of a tie then the first one to guess wins. You can have one edit per post and only one post per person. The ending time to guess will be December 23rd, at 5 pm EST...which is board time. I get the final decision on any issues.....however I don't think there have ever really been any and I don't expect them to start now ....I still think T213's are underrated....so here ya go....guess away

http://cgi.ebay.com/T213-Coupon-Cigs-Type-2-Ty-Cobb-Bat-Off-PSA-2-Centered_W0QQitemZ370005797235

and the prize will be this:

Posted By: leon
Your last post and guess is fine. The rule about 1 post is meant to keep the # of posts down somewhat. Since you had a technical difficulty your last post will count...and btw, that was about 9 minutes before it would have been too late. Good luck to all who played....My guess is $1655.55 and I can't win, but I wanted to play too .....regards

Posted By: Jeff Lichtman
I was actually about to bid more than the winning bid -- but upon seeing all the multiple bids by those with feedbacks of 1, 2, and 3, I decided against it. Who would have thought such an esoteric card would bring out so many new ebayers!

Posted By: leon
I don't think a T213-2 Cobby is very esoteric. I stand by my first assertation though.... As I mentoned in my initial post I think all T213's are undervalued relative to their scarcity. I didn't even look at the other bidders but the winner is a friend and (sometimes) board member. He knew exactly what he was doing....This card is a great looking "2". best regards

Posted By: Jeff Lichtman
Leon, the T213 Cobb is certainly esoteric -- when compared to the T206 version. And certainly not the kind of card a number of virtual first-time ebayers would be looking to snag as their entry into the vintage card hobby.

Huggins was his manager in 1912 when he plated for St. Louis. When Huggins became the manager for the Yankees, My Elmer Miller followed him the the Yankees as the center fielder. Weird coincidence the I win the card. I think so.

Ken

Posted By: leon
Ken- Neat story thanks for sharing.....Glad you won it too. Only $1.11 off is pretty remarkable.

Jeff L.

You said:

"Leon, the T213 Cobb is certainly esoteric -- when compared to the T206 version. And certainly not the kind of card a number of virtual first-time ebayers would be looking to snag as their entry into the vintage card hobby."

First of all your first sentence is exactly what I am referring to when I say they are undervalued relative to their scarcity. Thanks for agreeing with me...We almost always agree.. (insert some bizarre smiley face)

Secondly, what you are saying is that because they have 0, or low feedback, they are novice "first-time" ebayers, correct?

with all due humbleness ,
leon

Posted By: Jeff Lichtman
Leon, it just seems to me that if you're just starting on ebay to collect vintage baseball cards you're probably not going to run to a T213 when there are so many T206s around. And yet there were 3-4 of these virgin ebayers running up the bids. I just sold a bunch of T206s and T205s and 19th Century cards, some featuring HOFers. None of the dozens of bids I received were from ebayers with 0-3 feedback. I'm not making an accusation here but it does look bizarre -- which is why I stopped bidding on the auction.

Posted By: Bob
Pete- As I recall only the bat off and red portraits in the three Coupon sets.
Actually Hooks Wiltse has 6 variations in the 1914 Coupon set- 3 different teams for each of two poses, portrait and pitching. Many cards have multiple poses and team names but Wiltse has the most.
tbob
