Posted By: Ed McCollum
I work with a woman whose father played and managed minor league baseball his whole life. He passed away about two years ago, and she is now going through all the stuff he accumulated over his career. One of the things she came back with this weekend is a photo from the San Leandro CA winter league in 1947, which shows her father (Frank Benites; seventh from left; back row) among the entire team. One of his team mates is Billy Martin (seventh from left; front row), who was working his way up through the Yankee organization at the time.

Would anyone be able to help identify any of the other players in the photo? Her father had only marked Martin and the manager (simply as Mongo) and she would love to know the names of some of the others in the shot. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Ed

edited title

Bercovich & Son, first half winner of the Alameda AA City League, is well on its way toward taking second round honors. The Furniture tossers nosed out Roger's Clothiers, 2-1, over the week-end to take a handy lead in the loop's second round, which has two games remaining on the slate. Jack Faszholz went the route for Bercovich and Ed Botelho tossed out three runners trying to steal as well as hitting a double and single. Al Lawrence rapped four for four and Jim Dix hit two. Ivaldi, for the Clothiers, leveled on two including a double.

BUCKHORNS TRIUMPH
Buckhorn club whipped Clubhouse, 7-3, with Monahan and Albright opposing Nicols and Benites. Pat Ambrose turned in some fine plays at third base and hit three.
Pries and Serena each hit three. One of Pries' came with the bases loaded. Posted By: Chris Counts
I couldn't help but notice the name "Arlett" in one of the news accounts. Buzz Arlett, one of greatest of all Pacific Coast League players, was born very close to San Leandro in Elmhurst and would have been 47 at the time ...

Send him an e-mail, he may have interesting information. Mark had a great show today.

I also met Chris Counts for the first time at the show.

Peter C.
