Posted By: Brad Green
This is obviously not going to be a pick-up thread, so I've changed the title to be more appropriate.

Posted By: JK
This is a perfect example of the problem I see with constantly starting new pickup threads (and this is not directed at Brad for starting this thread). The 4th thread, while it had 48 posts, only had about 20-25 posts that actually had scans of new pickups. The other half of the posts were simply comments about the cards posted. Further, it took absolutely no time at all to load the thread with a broadband connection. We should go back to one on the 1st and one on the 15th if you ask me.

Edited to add: Great card Brad.

Posted By: Matt
Josh - leon already explained that twice a moth won't work because the images are stored by the server for only 1 week. Now, you could suggest everyone use external image hosting to avoid this problem...

Posted By: JK
Matt,

Twice per month worked just fine for many years before we switched to the current format and before external hosting was even available.

Plus, external hosting is now readily available, free, and easier to use than N54 hosting for those who want their pics to stay up longer than 1 week.

Posted By: Jim VB
I don't think we should rush right into this "committee" thing. We should probably appoint an advisory board to look into the viability of a committee having an impact.

Posted By: quan
you don't post enough, please post more!

as for op for a few years we had the 1st/15th format and it worked well because we only had 100-200 members. now with the 900-1000 or so registered (wild guess) we get everything from a t206 common to rob dewolf's roided body transformation through his cards (). personally i love reading what everyone just got but wading through 120-150 posts might be too much.

Posted By: leon
It was great meeting Paul today, and seeing Brett and Lyman again, and we all had a very good time at the chili cook off. I took 3 Tums on the way home and all was good.

JK- you obviously don't remember the recent thread about this topic. You said that it used to work fine every 2 weeks. Actually, it didn't...if you go back and read you will see that I didn't look at the threads anymore, after a while, as they took too long to download. I think Tbob, or someone else, said the same thing too. I know there were others that felt the same way as I remember speaking with folks about it. High speed has certainly eleminated that from being a problem...but we still have the 7 day issue of scans? I use Net54 temp files and will continue to use that space.

As I was telling Paul today I/we don't care to change the operations of the board unless it's a significant improvement. We always listen to thoughts.....As a matter of fact the Ebay category on the BST pages was made in response to a request from a member. We might have 8 pick up threads in a month but I don't think it's broken. I rather like it........regards

edited spellin'

Posted By: JK
Leon,

Obviously this is your board and you can and will do as you please. However, my problem is not with multiple pickup threads per se. It's with people starting new ones before the old ones have even had a chance to run their course (and are often still at the top of the front page).

For example, the fourth pickup thread this month began on the 14th and the fifth pickup thread (originally this thread before it was renamed) started a mere four days later. Thus, there was certainly no concern about N54 hosted scans being deleted (of course we all know that no one ever starts a new pickup thread because they are concerned about someone elses scans being deleted). Second, while the 4th pickup thread had 48 or 49 posts at the time - had one bothered to look, they'd have noticed that only about half of the posts actually contained a scan of a recent pickup. Naturally this means that there was no issue with load times (which as you correctly note is essentially a thing of the past for most of us regardless of the numbers).

Posted By: leon
Matt- nothing..

JK- Not sure if you have ever managed a lot of people before but when you do, and I have on many, many levels, you put your manager cap on. If one, or a few folks, out of a whole lot, gripe about something....you tend to listen but not do too much. If a whole lot of folks gripe about something it becomes more of an issue. The Recent Pick Up threads hasn't reached that level by far. I also don't agree this is "my" board but the buck does have to stop somewhere. Like I said I don't see any problem worth fixing vis a vis the threads in question. With that being said I will always listen to board members when it comes to operational issues...Thanks again for your participation. This is certainly an issue worth discussing, and it has been discussed....take care

Posted By: JK
Well said. Take your own advice. How many times have you stated that personal attacks should be avoided? That was uncalled for. Ive only raised an issue - the fact that you want to brush it aside and ignore it is your right. Unlike you, however, I would argue that that is not "good management". In the real world, if one person makes a complaint and its a valid one, it deserves attention even if everyone else is fine with the status quo. Obviously you dont feel that way or that the issue Ive raised has merit - fine. But if I choose to play by your rules, you cant then blame me for doing so.

Posted By: leon
If you want to discuss it more, then fine. It can be entertainment for others. I don't think the several responses and reasoning I gave you for not changing is "ignoring and brushing it aside". You really feel that way? And no, I guess I shouldn't have gotten personal but when people act like they are going to try and ruin a good thing, ie.. the pick up threads (saying "this should be fun"), then I get a little defensive. Sorry about that...you are right, I should know better...but I am human and it happens....best regards

added a comma

Posted By: Rob
what if we started a new pickup thread every monday? That way its once a week so the net54 can host the files for those that use it. Just a thought.

Rob

Posted By: Dave F
This is really stupid. Just leave the pickup threads as they are...I don't know why everyone has to act like a bunch of babies about such stupid junk. Who really cares if they get started over after post 35 or 56? Some people just have to find things to bitch about.

Posted By: leon
This just might be doable..

I just spoke with JK on the phone. I think picking up the phone and calling a person is valuable when things get a little heated. I have always been able to come to an understanding by doing this. Here's the deal....JK makes a very valid point that the pick up threads have a lot of commentary, good commentary, but commentary nonetheless. I just counted the number of scans vs total posts in the 4th pickup thread. I hurriedly counted 28 posts with scans out of 58 total posts.....Lets say about half of the posts have scans.....

The issue is that we can start a new pickup thread every other day and at the end of the month we will have 15 pickup threads and they will not have the organization we are hoping for....ie..fewer threads and more pics.

Either we can make the pickup threads last 60-70 total posts or we can do one every Monday (which I think I like, without giving it too much thought so far)......At the end of the day I want to do what the majority of the board wants to do in this instance....thoughts? I do agree there are probably more different pick up threads than there needs to be every month....also, is anyone still on dial up?

Posted By: David Bowden
In the year I have been on the board I have never seen a problem with the pickup threads, some run short and others long. It all evens out. If it is not broken don't fix it. Yes Leon, I'm still on dial up. Going to DSL or cable would eat into my card buying budget. (insert smiley here)
