Posted By: Jeff Williams
I recieved this catalog last week and have been unable to put it down. Not only did he have some of the most important cards in the hobby, but the quality and condition of each card is exceptional. I recommend this catalog to any collector of pre/post war baseball cards.

I have a question though, does anybody have the realized prices from this auction? If so, would you please email me at
jwilliams81@mac.com. I would greatly appreciate a copy.

Thanks
Jeff Williams

Posted By: Jeff Lichtman
Elliot--much thanks. I could only afford to work on it for about 45 seconds due to the large hourly rate I was charging myself.

Posted By: Kenny Cole
Jeff,

That's the problem with large hourly rates. If you had simply charged yourself a contingency fee you could have searched for as long as you wanted for only 1/3 of the catalog price.

Posted By: Jeff Williams
Barry-Thanks, I look forward to the photocopy!

Jeff-It was JimB who had a post asking where he could buy the catalog. Somebody said Amazon and sure enough they had four or five copies. I bought one pretty quick and then checked back the next day and they were almost all gone.

Everybody- For those who were around and active in the hobby at the time of this auction, perhaps you could shed some light on it. Was this a truly defining moment in the hobby? Were the prices astronomical? It seems as though the entire auction catalog is an encyclopedia of rare cards. And, i still can't get over the fact that almost all of his cards were near mint to mint. I am not usually a condition sensitive collector (I don't think my collection has a card over ex condition, I perfer rarity over condition), however, Copeland's collection provides rarity with condition.

Any information about the auction is greatly appreciated!

Jeff Williams

Posted By: Wolfgang427
Well I was at the auction in NYC at the time and though the prices were high, I did manage to buy a few lots. I think the Wagner PSA-8 is what really set the auction off. You should of seen the room go silent when the bidding started and ended with applause when a phone bidder(Gretzky-unkown to the floor) bought it.

Posted By: barrysloate
I participated in the auction and attended all the sessions. At the time I was focussed almost entirely on 19th century material. The hobby was different then. Things like cabinet cards and rare CdV's were very hotly contested. Actual cards were not as expensive. Cards have only skyrocketed in the last 5-6 years. Before that they were rather affordable.
But the Copeland sale was a big event because there had never been an auction of that size or scope before.

Posted By: PAS
What about ‘focus’?
This word can take either double or single s, with the single option being highly preferred.

Posted By: barrysloate
Dictionary lists both single and double "s" with the single listed first. Why is it strongly preferred? It looks funny, as if the word were pronounced fo-koozed.

Posted By: Joseph
There's plenty of copies, at a wide range of price:

http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?bi=0&bx=off&ds=30&sortby=2&sts=t&tn=copeland+baseball&x=0&y=0

It can be argued that "The Copeland Collection" was the coming out party for baseball cards/memorabilia...
