Posted By: Dan Bretta
Anyone else watch this yet? It was neat to see how he kept his collection...I had only imagined it before this.

Does anyone know when Mr Carter stopped collecting and why? It was also interesting to hear that he had set up at card shows and sold cards. I did not know that. I also enjoyed his comments about Bill Mastro showing up in the 1970s to their local card auctions and winning every lot.

I found his stories about telling his wife that Sunday nights were "card mounting" nights and that he planned on continuing his hobby after marriage entertaining as well.

Thanks to Lionel and his wife for sharing.

RC

I doubt Doug, or Mastro Auctions, would mind if you burned a copy of the dvd for yourself too. Mr.Carter was all about promoting the hobby so in that spirit I think we are safe. Everyone that collects vintage baseball cards should see this video, imho.....You really get to see one (actually 2 with Bill in it) of the hobby pioneers up close and personal....regards

Having acquired several of his cards (now encapsulated by SGc as from the Lionel Carter Collection), I know I'd love to sit down with him and just listen to the stories of the early days and his conversations with Jefferson Burdick, Frank Nagy, Buck Barker and others.

I am right with you though. Mr. Carter was a friend of Burdicks and helped him with the ACC. Mr.Carter also wrote many articles in hobby trade papers too, from what I understand. My guess is that he helped the hobby more than almost anyone on this board.....best regards

Posted By: Bob
I got the impression from watching the video that Lionel Carter was writing 9-10 pages (actually 4-5 pages since he said they were on half page sized paper) and sending out mimeographs (anyone over 45 here remember the old machines where you typed on the special mimeograph paper and then attached it to a drum and turned it to make mimeo copies) to others. I am not sure that they were winding up in trade periodicals or just being sent out to other collectors. I'd like to think he was the forerunner of the Net54 Board, sharing information with collectors, but without the jokes, off-topic threads and flames.

Since I am interested in the history of the hobby, and not only the cards, he has been a recognized name for me. The reason I took your comment in a somewhat offensive manner is that I had just viewed the DVD of him and he reminded me of my grandfather, rest his soul. I am not sure how to put it any better than my definition of what "the old guard" is. Honest, nice, integrity, etc....I am sending my DVD to Trae this week and if you want to view it I will have him send it to you and you can send it back to me after you view it, if you want? That was a great video. It broke my heart a little to hear Mr. Carter talk about how he couldn't share his set with others. It is such a shame (and legitimate concern) that people would target a collection like that. Part of what makes collecting so much fun is sharing the hobby with others and the camaraderie with fellow collectors.

I Only Smoke 4 the Cards
04-02-2014, 04:50 PM
On further reflection there was one thing from the video that rubbed me the wrong way. The SGC rep said that he owned a mantle that had been the highest graded copy before Carter's. I don't know how I feel about TPG employees having their own cards graded by the TPG. Seems like a conflict of interest.

Does this bother anyone else?

CW
04-02-2014, 08:05 PM
It would be bothersome if we knew for sure he had it graded while he was working at SGC, but it's possible he bought his Mantle already graded, or he sent it to PSA, etc. Tough to know for sure.

The one thing that struck me in the video was how Doug Allen flew out to just look at the cards, but when he arrived Mr. Carter was getting them ready so Doug could take them to be auctioned. Just a little bit saddening to see a lifelong, passionate collector letting go, realizing most likely he didn't have much time left.

These things we collect are all just pieces of cardboard with men on them, and we will all come to the point where we will have to sell our collections. Still, I'm not looking forward to it. :)

I truly treasure the DVD that Mastro Auctions sent with their catalog to introduce the auction of his massive high quality collection. Listening to The Jack Benny Show on the radio while mounting his card collection in those albums--what a beautiful word picture. Painstaking work, but filled with contentment when done.

Doug Allen did not fly over to see Mr. and Mrs. Carter. Lionel lived in close by Evanston, Illinois. They had resided in that home for many, many years. I got to visit him a couple of times in the early 70s. What a delight and privilege!

As I recall, the Mastro Auction people helped the police recover Mr. Carter's collection, though the exact details escape me. It was soon after that that Lionel phoned Doug Allen to begin proceedings about auctioning his collection.

What I will always remember is that afterwards National Public Radio interviewed Mr. Carter about the auction of his collection, and the huge windfall of money it generated. Lionel replied simply, "I'd really rather have the cards."

I miss Lionel. I miss his forceful hobby articles.:(

First off, I'm glad I was able to convert the DVD and upload it for all to view.
Hopefully the video will remain in our hobby for years to come and serve as a
reminder of the spirit that Lionel Carter left us with. Say what you will about
Mastro Auctions, but I believe the video was truly a marvelous piece of history
about one of the true giants of our hobby.

As I recall, Mastro made one other video about their company. I think I still
have that DVD as well.

I want to say that during Mastro's heyday, as part of their auctions they
produced videos of some of their finer lots. Does anyone have any of these
videos, or have access to them? I once wrote to Legendary Auctions inquiring
about the videos, but as I recall they didn't keep them in their archives.

Any help would be appreciated.

It would be great if someone could upload it to YouTube. Would do it myself but I left my CD, along with about a half-ton of Mastro catalogs, back in da Islands when I moved to the Mainland.

I'll see if I can find mine!

As to It was an attempt to converse with Mr David!
And it work'd... Sort of...

So "My Apologies" go out to the Entire McDonald Clan!
For what ever I did I did it to do it, and now it is done...
Thank You David for Your heartfelt note desiring my attention (:

Hiya Denny
All in good fun.
That's a rip-snortin' portrait of the Christian Gentleman.
Some lucky lad pulled this handsome Matty out of a box of Cracker Jack 108 years ago. Eventually Mr Carter acquired it. Many decades later it found its way, sans "the famous confection", to your old cyberpal Kawika, just a few degrees of separation from Sailor Jack and Bingo a century ago. Life is indeed grand.
Speaking of the Mastro CD, it is on YouTube after all. Here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50pkXT_UPm0
The fellow who posted it gives a short intro about Lionel Carter. The CD content starts at 6:40 +/-

I'll throw in this old photo for good measure.

Always nice to see old threads resurrected. I love the makeshift "card binders" Mr. Carter created. I do have a vast appreciation to how the hobby was handled in it's early years (along with a healthy appreciation for other things from the mid 20th century) I suppose the grass is always greener, you always want what you didn't/can't have.

As a side note is there a term for being Nostalgic for a time you didn't live in? Because I very much get that feeling at times! :D

What a fascinating video. A nostalgic look back to the hobby beginnings when trust and trades were everything. The Carters are Rockwellian Americana. I love the comment that Sunday nights were card mounting nights, listening to Jack Benny on the radio. Fittingly, the 30's music that played in the background was Jack Benny's theme song, Love in Bloom.

I will always believe Mastro / Allen really did a number on poor old Carter. But they are paying now, what goes around comes around!

What did they do? They didn’t buy collection, they auctioned the collection.. If you know more post it.

Both article and video state that he only picked the best conditioned cards. I see many of his listed are either authentic or grading very low ( 1-2 ). I find it curious how many are now getting higher grades ( maybe some doctoring going on ).
