Posted By: Joseph
I've suggested this before and I'll suggest it again, text copied (with minor edit) from a previous post:

Survey Proposal: What do we really think about "The Card", the PSA8 Piedmont Wagner
June 1 2007 at 1:18 PM
Joseph (Login base_ball)
Given all the recent discussion on "The Card," I think it's time to run the numbers
and see where we stand on this topic. Here's my proposed survey:

I believe the PSA8 T206 "Gretzky" Piedmont Wagner:

1 • … came out of a period cigarette pack as is.

2 • … came out of a period cigarette pack and was later trimmed.

3 • … was cut as is from a period sheet.

4 • … was cut from a period sheet and then later trimmed again.

5 • … is a 1950s reprint

I think I've covered all the major possibilities, but please suggest improvement
here. And then maybe Leon make this happen. I have a feeling it might be
a very popular survey.

Posted By: leon
All good ideas so far. I really wish people would quit insinuating fallacies that are not ever part of our thinking. Nothing is off limits as far as polls go as long as it's in keeping with the focus of the board. I hope that clears up the attitude of ours. Brian and I will contemplate it and see what we can do....thanks

Posted By: Ray Piskadlo
Leon,

That wasn't an attack on you. As a lurker for over 4 years now, I've seen how "passionate" people can be about certain issues. Grading companies being the main one, but lately auction houses have gained ground. I just thought that the topic of favorite auction house could lead to an unnecessary bashing session. We all know there are about 10-15 quality auction services out there. Each one has its pros and cons: buyer's/seller's premiums, exposure, reputation, etc. Does it really matter which one the Net54 population likes the best???

I await everyone's bashing now!

Posted By: Gilbert Maines
I made no insinuation. The subject was broached, and I addressed it directly. The subject is important and a continuing consideration. This is due to the difference between the sale of legitimate advertising space, and the sale of our commentary.

It is my belief that we all need to be watchdogs regarding the subject. And I applaud Ray for keeping our eye on it. GotSparks!

Posted By: barrysloate
I kind of agree with Ray, and I am of course one of the names on the list.

Rating businesses is done all the time, but somebody will end up at the bottom of the list, or second to last, and it may just create bad feelings. Maybe a more upbeat poll could be considered.

Posted By: leon
My comment wasn't directed at you it was directed at Gil. Gil is one of the ones that continually conjures up issues that have never happened and never will, at least as long as I am running the show, and have been running the show. I will continue to let history speak for itself. With all of the world watching I am sure glad Gil is taking it upon his shoulders to make sure this stays an open forum, since it hasn't been run that way in the past..... sheesh...

edited to go from a general statement to a direct one and some grammar...

Posted By: Gilbert Maines
Leon:
It is true that we have disagreed in the past about what constitutes censorship, and about the seriousness of banning people. Of course, I do not know what specifics you are refering to, if you do not state them. However, I do not think that either of us has an interest in pursuing this path.
You interpretation of my post is another instance of our disagreement.
Gil

Posted By: peter chao
Gil,

Leon lets his competition post in this forum, that's pretty liberal don't you think? We've got a good thing here, guys. I do think that a poll on auction houses would be too divisive.

I vote for something more upbeat.

Peter C.

Posted By: JK
Thats a good one Daniel.

I think the answer is clearly the baseball cards since my dog is smart enough to get out of the house herself, the photos are all backed up on a cd rom stored in a separate location (and the wedding album photos are maintained by the photographer) and finally the cezzane is only a reprint - my original is on loan to the Louvre.

Posted By: barrysloate
Leon and Jeff- that was a fascinating exchange the two of you had but I disagree with you a bit. My opinion is: E

I just voted in the new poll but I believe it is biased because the topic has already been so thoroughly discussed on the board.
