Posted By: Paul Grubor
Check this completed auction out...230161581452...This is a psa 6 at best...
Check the right border for the obvious print flaws..also..the bottom left has a ding. This is by far the worst 8 I've seen in a long time...Question, Is it possible to trace the psa number and when it was graded?

Posted By: PS
I haven't looked at the auction, but typically there are a couple of clues that sometimes help date a grade (PSA itself does not provide the information). One, on the back, cards graded before 2002 (I think) have a hologram on the outside. Two, VERY EARLY PSA grades have long bar codes and slashes through the "O"s. Other than that I don't know any other way.

Posted By: Paul Grubor
You've got to check out the card....there is no way on earth that this is a psa 8. I wish I knew how to post the completed auction on here but please check it out...

Posted By: Paul Grubor
I'm looking for an 8 for my collection but I would never pay 4k plus for this one. Thanks for posting the photo...What do you guys think? Am I missing something or is this a 6 at best?

Posted By: Mike
Well, check out the other PSA 8 currently on eBay. Would you trade the rough cut and other issues on the one above for one that is significantly more off center (which many consider to be a much bigger flaw)? They've all got problems - that's why they are 8s.

Posted By: leon
This post should really be on the Post War side so lets do be careful in the future.....Just trying to keep things tidy....and I know I let one go yesterday but there was a fairly good story behind it.....thanks much....BTW, when I collected rookie HOF'ers I had an Aaron in a 7 holder....but sold it after I got over that phase of my collecting....this 8 doesn't look that good to me but better than an OC card..

Posted By: Jason L
weird.
anyway, I will say this:
I have a stack of 1950s and 60s stuff that is about to go off to PSA, and I hope I get whoever graded this card - because that would put me on EASY street come sale time!!!
Posted By: peter chao
The Hank Aaron Rookie is often rough cut like this one. The grader probably said that since that is a common problem with the card I'm not going to downgrade the card because of that and thus the 8. However, that is not the proper way to grade. It is no more than a 6 in my opinion.

Peter C.

Posted By: PAS
You would deduct two grades for the rough cut?

Posted By: peter chao
It's more than that, it is also slightly off-centered and if you look at the right edge there's a touch of green which is probably a printer's mark. PSA 6 would be a very fair grade. An 8 should be nearly perfect.

Peter C.

Posted By: Jason L
also looks a little funny...as though it, along with the top left corner are "bat-eared" with a curl upwards from trimming.
very tough to tell from a scan though, and I am no expert.
Posted By: PAS
Centering is certainly consistent with an 8 Peter C. and I don't think typically a light rough cut results in a deduction. My concerns would be the printer's mark and more importantly whatever that stuff is below it on the right side, plus the lower left corner, that possibly is just the rough cut extending into the corner as to which there may be disagreement if it should result in a deduction.

Posted By: JimB
Mastro sold a PSA 10 Aaron rookie with a rough cut. I think a rough cut in a 10 is pushing it, but an 8 is ok. A 10 should have no flaws at all, even manufacturing flaws.
JimB

Posted By: boxingcardman
I was always under the impression that a rough cut on 1950s Topps cards resulted from the cutting blade wearing down and that a factory rough cut was a trait to establish the lack of handling of the card after it was issued. I know that when I used to submit cards to PSA back in the dark ages I often looked for rough cut cards from the 1954 set and got very good grades with them.

Posted By: Chris Counts
I have no problem with the rough cut at all, but the print marks on the left have got to be worth a deduction of at least two grades. It's certainly no "8."

Posted By: peter chao
Granted, I see it less often, but I do see the Aaron rookie without the rough cuts. So if you are going to give this card an 8. The same card without the rough cut is going to be a 9. It gets pretty ridiculous.

Peter C.

Posted By: Steve Dawson
Personally, after looking at the subject card, the entire bottom edge of the holder definitely looks frosted to me.

Edited to add: Upon further review, I also see apparent signs of frosting on both sides of the holder. That card IMO, has got to be a "switch-out"!!

Steve

Posted By: Jeff Lichtman
I don't think the bottom edge is frosted; I think that's PSA's occasional version of an 8.

I've been looking to buy that card in 7 or 8 and when I saw that card I thought that only an idiot would pay the price for an 8 for it. The scratches or whatever the hell are on the card really take away from the card's potential beauty. Who would pay 4K for it except to try to sell it to another sucker?

Posted By: E, Daniel
Steve, I've come to believe the whole frosted thing is over stated. I just got back a shipment from SGC that I gave them at the national (11 cards), and every single slab shows frost points around the edges....and all the cards were originally raw or crossovers. BTW, very happy with the service and grades .

Daniel

Posted By: rand
at some point, PSA is going down the path of GAI, sloppy grades and losing customer confidence. just like the T206 Cobb Drum on another post. at least they have great customer service!
