Posted By: Millerhouse
In view of the extraordinary sale recently of the W555 camera-like candy box, I thought I'd post the attached uncut strip of W555-like cards from my collection to see if anyone can shed any light on them.

(My apologies for the long string of blue, but I'm just now trying to figure out how to post images and have no idea, as yet how to edit this down.)

In any event, certain of these W555-like images are familiar from E93 and perhaps other caramel issues. I don't know whether any of these match at all with W555 images, but I would certainly be interested in seeing whether any do and whether anyone else has additional cards from this "issue." I can't imagine that they were intended to be additional "photos" for the camera issue, but, with that mystery solved, I thought it might be fun to raise another one.

Dan

Posted By: Paul
The Young, Mcgraw and Waddell poses all appear in the W555 set. The other two might also. I just don't know.

They sure look like W555s to me. Just when you thought the mystery was solved. Maybe these were issued two different ways or more.

Posted By: Millerhouse
To all,

The scan above slightly washed out a bit of the sepia tone. Otherwise, the strip is a blank-backed cardboard of approximately the same thickness and weight of W555s. The borders are, indeed, different enough to make it clear that these are not classic W555s. Anyone out there have any others like this?

Dan

Posted By: caramelcard
Interesting item.

All 5 players pictured are from W555 and they're specifically all E93 poses which makes me wonder a bit.

One possibility that might make sense is that certain cards were placed together on different W555 boxes. Standard Caramel might've picked cards from that particular series of boxes.

It could be an ad piece as another poster mentioned, but not really sure.

Thanks for posting it.

Posted By: leon
I would vote some type of ad piece for the W555's type produxt that we recently saw on the full box. It's certainly not one of these....

Posted By: Scott Mosley
Sorry for the late reply on this thread, its been a busy week for me.

Dan, I appreciate the vote of confidence. I wouldn't call myself an expert at this set but I have been collecting it for a little while now (still about 12 known cards short of a set).

As far as the W555 "strip", I would say that there are enough similarities that the suggestion of it being part of a possible advertising piece makes sense.

Who knows, we never knew about the complete camera box up until this year so maybe a complete W555 advertising piece will show up someday.

There are enough differences with images on this W555 "strip", however, that if the strip was cut into individual cards, they could still be distinguished from the W555 images that we are used to from the candy box tabs.

I've noted the following differences:

1) The images on the W555 "strip" are all cropped differently so that they show a bit more of the picture than generally found on corresponding W555 cards.
2) Young is missing the period at the end of Amer on the strip.
3) Waddell shows Am vs. Amer.
4) Leach shows Nat vs. Nat'l
5) Gibson shows Nat vs. Nat'l

Here is an enlarged image of the strip vs. individual W555s of the players depcited.

Still a pretty neat piece and I have to think is somehow related to the W555s in some way.

Scott
