Posted By: Steve M.
but I think I'd choose the Cobb. It would fill two desires, a red Cobb and a real hobby rarity. I have a nice Young T206 portrait and an e107 Powers that both fill those needs.

Posted By: barrysloate
Jeff- my only response to your question is I would never solicit the opinion of others on which card to buy. If you can only afford one, the only card to buy is the one you want. Other people's opinions are irrelevant. That's just my read on it from when I was actively collecting.

Posted By: MVSNYC
it basically comes down to eye appeal, rarity, and value...and obviously which card fits into your collecting structure...as much as i appreciate the cy young card, i am a hardcore T206 rare back collector, so for me, it is a no-brainer...

i assume jeff is asking just to get a sense of demand/which one is more desirable...(i.e. which one would be a smarter purchase)...yes, we are all collectors, but when you are deciding which card to drop $40K on, you want it to be a smart/great purchase, that is very desirable, in case one decides to sell it down the road...

Posted By: barrysloate
Thay are both rare cards, but my point was if he had his heart set on the Cobb, and the board recommended the Young, does he buy what he wants or what someone else tells him to buy? No matter what anyone says, in the end you buy the one you want. If your first choice ends up being out of your price range, then you can always use the other as a fallback.

Posted By: MVSNYC
barry- yes but, if you can afford both, and you are attracted to both, and if both are "kinda" equally as rare...the input from the board could inform you & help decide...if 17 people say, jeff, you must go for the cobb, much better choice, then i think that would help him decide.

Posted By: JimB
Cobb in a heartbeat. It is one of the legendary cards in the hobby. And the color on this example is striking. I am a bit biased towards color on cards in general. On a very base level, to me the Cobb is simply a better looking card. This is not to take anything away from the Young, which is also spectacular and important. As you know, I have my biases on this one.
JimB

Posted By: Steve M.
is looking for a recommendation. At least I didn't read it that way. I think he is just looking for personal preferences among the board members. They're both nice cards but to reiterate I would "prefer" to have the Cobb.

Posted By: Rob Dewolf
Folks post "Which one would you keep?" or "Which one would you choose?" threads all the time on this board. What's the issue with Jeff posting this one? (BTW, I'd go with the Cobb.)

Posted By: Jeff Lichtman
I think the reason I ask for feedback (and I've done this twice before) is that I have equal feelings towards the cards and am curious if there is something that I have missed about either of them which could sway me. Simple eye appeal is a large part of the decisionmaking process but historical significance, rarity, etc. factor in strongly as well.

Posted By: E, Daniel
The out of focus nature of the Cobb would distract me far too greatly, looking at his eyes actually hurts mine.

I think the Cy Young is a much nicer card, and free of the ongoing debate of origins and such. What happens if an advertising card turns up showing that the Cobb was a giveaway for a month at the local tobacconist, and not even inserted with product.....I think the uncertainty around the Cobb back could be both its greatest benefit and greatest drawback going forward.

Daniel

Posted By: Wesley
I have been told that there might be approximately ten Young cards out there, so the populations for the two cards are similar. The reason, I would choose the E107 over the Cobb w/ Cobb back is the question surrounding the Cobb card. Some say it is a T206 while others think the card is more similar to Coupon Cigarette cards. If the card is not truly a T206, I think it is no longer as desireable.

Posted By: Jeff Lichtman
Cat, I read your mind previously. I just knew you loved that Hank Aaron jersey, especially now with Barry about to break the record. So, I'm willing to pass on that one for you if you wouldn't mind passing on one for me. So we're set, right? Great.

Posted By: Dan Bretta
I like the Cy Young better. I think the Cobb has more potential down the road to be worth more $$$. If I had unlimited funds I would buy the Young. If I were buying for not just enjoyment but investment as well I would by the Cobb.
