Posted By: leon
Unless there is something I have never heard, or don't know, this is about a $50 card (maybe $100 tops as it is pretty nice for the series).....at $462 that is plumb crazy.....imo....

Posted By: Kenneth A. Cohen
I have about half of this set and intended to try to nibble away at it to completion. I can't imagine what's going on here. I paid about 50 bucks or so for a SGC 50 Gooch not all that long ago. If these prices are typical of what is to come, I guess it's time to abandon ship.

Posted By: doug
you have half the set? thats quite an accomplishment in itself regardless of condition. 240 in the set so i cant imagine there are very many complete sets around. You can pick up raw, poor condition ones for pretty reasonable prices, but decent condition have started to to become a bit pricier, however the prices for the E 120s listed by that seller seem insane. I wanted to bid on some of the PSA 3s and PSA 4s as some of them had nice eye appeal, but the bidding is way out of hand. I fear that the prices of mid condition graded 1920 am caramels are going to go the way of some of the earlier E issues, such as the E 93s and E98s because there are very few out there but still these prices are just leaving me scratching my head. Check out the current price of the waite hoyt!!! Ive heard of the seller before but it stil seems crazy, because some mid condition SGC graded E 120s just went for a lot lower prices just days ago. Perhaps a few buyers are trying to complete a psa graded e 120 set and price is no object.

Posted By: barrysloate
Are there two or three guys working on sets right now who are just getting in a bidding war with each other? That's often an explanation for crazy prices. Then when they finish their sets, prices come back down to normal.

Posted By: jay behrens
Could be registry guys expanding. If you want to make the PSA HOF, you have to have sets across the board, not just t206s, Goudeys, etc. so these guys with egos are gonna start chasing less mainstream sets to try and increase their chances for the PSA HOF. If you can't have the best t206 and 33 Goudey sets, then a bunch of top ranked obscure sets will make you look better.

Just my thoughts on it.

Jay

I love pinatas. Posted By: Scot Reader
The B&W sets from the teens and twenties (e.g. M101-4, M101-5, E120, E121, etc.) are no longer being ignored. I think everyone can safely forget about the days when you could pick up raw EX commons for sub-$30 and raw EX HOFers for sub-$100. Try doubling or tripling that and you'll be close.

Posted By: David
The prices over the last couple of months have been ridiculous. Last month a E120 Gerber GAI 2.5 sold for $120+. I picked up a SGC 50 for around $35 earlier this year on ebay.

Posted By: leon
The group I just picked up I thought was a pretty good buy given there were 3 HOFer's in 6 holders, 2 in 5 holders, 2-3 in 4.5 holders, and 2 of them in 4 holders......They key is to finding some of these cards/sets before they catch on.....the early E cards are out of control upward and have been for a while....I was speaking with a board member about these black and whites the other day. What do early E cards of HOF'ers go for in 6 holders nowadays? Big money....and the black and white cards have a certain nostalgic look to them. Don't worry I won't let the fact it seems like these are becoming hot influence my pricing model..... ....

He came in and for about 3mo-6mo bought everything he could for very high prices. Then something happened and he either got caught, or flew the coop, or something, but was gone...vanished? All of his packages he won got sent to somewhere like a condo, or apt., in Florida....

edited spellin'

Posted By: brian p
Pipp is no more difficult than any other e120, just a little more popular because of his connection to Lou Gherig. Here's my theory--I think someone has discovered that the winning bidder's bids can be pushed to the extreme and is taking advantage of this fact (for whatever nefarious reasons). I imagine many a shady character is thanking ebay for the bidder identities being hidden after $200.00.

Brian

Posted By: Anonymous
those are nice looking cards for the grades and there are just a few of each graded so i can see why they are in demand, but there are obviously a group of collectors actively collecting this set and price is no impediment. even most of the advanced collectors are missing complete or even partial sets of these e120 and the e121s.....

just look at what the waite hoyt psa 7 in the e121 series went for in the sloate auction last night....about 3 grand i think

After all, Miller is a distant relative of mine and he was the first Yankee to ever get a hit in a World Series. The silly thing is that I just traded A really nice Miller for an E121 Carl Mays with Alleycatwino Just last week. Maybe he is hording Miller cards

Posted By: barrysloate
Two bidders fought it out to that level. The third bidder's high was $116. Seems like these prices are temporarily skewed while two guys working on a set battle it out. Give it a few months and they will come back down.

Posted By: Mark L
It does look like a couple of bidders are driving up the prices and that this particular escalation may not last. But it also strongly suggests that the cards are not as plentiful--especially in nice shape---as has been assumed.

Posted By: Scot Reader

Barry and Mark,
I agree with you that this is a temporary blip. But my guess is that these trades will establish a higher baseline for prices once they normalize. For example, the previous $80-100 baseline for PSA 5s may change to a $150-200 baseline, as traders enter the market and await the next tandem willing to pay $1200.
Scot

Posted By: Mark L
Who knows what lurks in the heart of Alleycatwino? If it were mere larceny, he would be buying expensive cards rather than creating them in what may be a limited market. In any case, I am sure that prices will go down right away since I will soon be selling a few of my extras.

We had an exchange of emails recently and he seems on the up and up. He does seem to bid without regard to price and will do what it takes to get a card he wants.

Ken
