Posted By: peter chaoGuys, There's an East Coast bias to this board. Maybe it's just my imagination or maybe all the hard-core collectors are on the East Coast. However, I'm trying to pull together a West Coast get-together in San Francisco. Maybe a few of us can get together in a month or two in San Francisco. Any of you have an idea for a date or place. Just remember that the best Irish restaurants and pubs are in San Francisco. If that doesn't sell you on the idea, nothing will. It'll be lots of fun, we can bull**** about our collection and baseball over dinner. Peter

By San Francisco terms the class factor would be about a 2.8 on a scale of 10. The corn beef and brisket is good but's no high end restaurant by any means. Posted By: jay behrensBcD is right about Lefty's, not high class but the right atmosphere for the crowd. Personally, I don't care for the food there. In the city, my favorite places are Cafe Sport which makes a garlic pasta that will leave your breath reeking for days no matter how much you brush and gargle <img src="/images/happy.gif" height=14 width=14> Schroeder's (great German food) and in Oakland/Emeryville, The Gingerbread House (awesome cajun and creole food). Best burger joint is Hot N Hunky. There is another restaurant next door to Cafe Sport, I think Leaning Tower of Piza, that has a nice vintage baseball display and some awesome osso bucco Jay I love pinatas. You get to beat the crap of something and get rewarded with candy.

In 'N' Out is great, of course, but in my opinion, Fat Apples in Berkeley makes the meanest burger in the Bay- a bold statement that is near-blasphamous to even THINK, here, in Califorinia. I dunno, maybe it's just the naturally subversive attitute already present in the Berkeley air that makes there burgers seem so good, or it could also be the nostalgic feeling I get from Fat Apples' Jack London theme.....perhaps it's a little bit of both. Right now I'm leaning towards having our dinner at Lefty's at 7:00 on June 30. Although the Stinking Rose is a good restaurant and only down the block from where I work, it is relatively small in size. Lefty's is more fitting and it's been a while since I looked at the photos on display. Peter

My faves are the Italian Stallion and Pastrami burger. I forget the name of the burger with blue cheese on it, but that's real good too. The ultimate greasy spoon Chinese in SF is Sam Wo's. Dirty cheap and you get a ton of food. They won't give you a fork until they are done making fun of you mercilessly and the only drink they have is tea, but they allow you bring your drinks in. When I threw raves in SF, we used to finish up the night at Sam's and they would let us keep a pony keg of beer there for us until we got there. For desert, the Toy Boat Cafe near Japantown is really good and has great collection of vintage toys. Jay I love pinatas. You get to beat the crap of something and get rewarded with candy.

The last time I checked their open until 4:00 a.m. At one time they had the famous kissing waiter. Of course, he would only kiss the pretty ladies...but he's gone to that big restaurant in the sky. Posted By: jay behrensYup, Sam's has always been open until 4am, which was perfect for us Klub Kids, and it is closed on Mondays. My roommates and I used to eat there at least 2-3 times a week. Nothing like a lot of good food real cheap. The 5 of us could got there and eat for less than $20 total and take food home. Man, it sucks living in bumfuq, MN. There aren't decent restaurants within 100 miles of here <img src="/images/sad.gif" height=14 width=14> Jay I love pinatas. You get to beat the crap of something and get rewarded with candy.

I really miss the city, but it got too expensive to live there with =out selling your soul to corporate America. Brian, how did Cafe Sport get so pricey? Do they still have the carved up wooden booths, or did they totally renovate the place? Although I can see that raising prices wouldn't really hurt business since even in the 90s, there was a line to get in every night. Is the place still owned by Antonio? Posted By: Cobby33Whilst the new "DiMaggio's" in North Beach is different than the one that used to be in Fisherman's Barf, we find it to be commensurate with our tastes. It is owned by the same group who owns McCovey's and Big Crosby's in Walnut Creek. It is very nice, but on the expensive side. There's nearby Bocce Cafe, which isn't expensive and has good food. Whilst North Beach Pizza is also good, we find that parking sucks anywhere in North Beach. There's also Momo's across from AT&T Park, as well as Paragon, which is a stone's throw. Whilst there is a night game June 30, it could be fun anyway, especially if you meet after first-pitch and since this is a baseball card geek-fest.

I liked the old Dimaggio's because it was reasonable and I doubt that the new Dimaggio's would be comparable. On the other hand, I've gone to Bocce Cafe a number of times and feel comfortable with both the quality and the price. Are there any strong objections to changing the venue to the Bocce Cafe. The good thing about this thread is that we've covered about all the good eating places in SF. Peter

You guys know San Francisco is a parking garage with no place to park right? And in North Beach of all places! But then, it won’t matter where you eat if Vesuvio’s is on the agenda afterwards! I love sitting upstairs looking out the stain glass windows over looking Kerouac Alley where sex is free and so is hippy lettuce. And if you know the place as soon as it gets dark and they roll the projector showing scenes from the 1906 earthquake on the walls of the bar for hours while you drink Anchorsteam and Guinness dark on tap! Yee haw! Isn’t that a site for a drunken sailor to remember in fondness! The Nam King is right there! You can yell in there and no one will care! Jay,the Cafe'Sport has never been cheap! But after a while you will only go to a few because you feel comfortable there for whatever reasons. Maybe you know your going to run into your friends. Or perhaps, it's a place you can avoid some people. Whatever, I'm sure you understand. I've tried all 3 of the restaurants mentioned and I like Bocce the best, but if you have other specific suggestions let me know. Peter

Sunday, June 31, 2007 at the top of the world famous Fairmont for champagne brunch at 11:30 a.m., for those that go to church on Sunday there are numerous churchs that surround the Fairmont. We meet after church for some socializing. I'm not sure how much it costs anymore, but I suspect it's around $20 per adult. If you can't make it, do you have another suggestion. Peter

BcD sure you can trade vintage cards, look at it this way if everything works out there will be about 6 guys and we'll be looking for fair trades instead of exorbitant profits. You might need to make a couple of trades before you get what you want. What is the worst thing that could happen. We could spend a lot of time discussing the merits of different cards and no actual trade is completed. That's not so bad, isn't that what GMs do most of the time. There's a lot of talk but no trade. I'm starting a rumor right now that Mark Mcrae may show-up at the dinner. Also, the all-star Fanfest will occur in the following week. Another rumor is that Todd McFarlane will issue a Barry Bond's Starting Line-up to commeorate (SIC) home run No. 756, these figures will be sold at the Fanfest. This follows Topps tradition of issuing a card in 1974 for Hank Aaron prior to him breaking the record.
