Posted By: davidcycleback
Question: is collecting better than non-collecting?

A lot collectors overpay for crap they know little about. A lot of dealers (Lipset, Lifson, Sloate) are the hobby experts who the collectors turn to for info. Any 'true collector' who references Lipset's Encyclopedia of Baseball Cards is depending on information provided and produced by a dealer. And, without the loathsome sellers, I'm curious to know how the true collectors would obtain their cards.

I have nothing against buying without selling. I admire those who do it and do agree the practice's supporters that it has a kind of purity to it. However, I don't find inferior someone selling dupes or reselling to raise funds for another purchase inferior or holding an honest auction of authentic material. In fact, my opinion is that honest and learned dealers and auctioneers are the most valuable to the hobby, as they are the ones disseminating the material to the collectors. And it is the dishonest sellers who do the most harm.

Posted By: barrysloate
There are so many different ways people collect that it would be almost impossible to define a true collector. Even the most dedicated one sells some things once in a while. If you love collecting, you're a collector.

Posted By: rand
Good question...i think in todays market its difficult not to intermingle both, i think its a natural part of the hobby to try to obtain cards under market value or buy a group of cards and sell off the extras to pay for the ones you need. Investment almost happens immediately as the value of the cards keep going up. The grading game has significantly changed the hobby as the price scale for every grade level is available, versus the old days where cards were basically either NM,VG, or Poor and left up to the dealers for their perspective of mint.

Posted By: Bob Pomilla
"I'd like to know how many board members consider them selfs true collectors?"

Well, I only buy, not sell, cards, so in that sense I suppose I'm a "true" collector. Certainly not in an arrogant sense, though.

"For example: "I only buy cards I need" (not buying cards for a fast investment)"

Don't know that I "need" any cards (though a psychiatrist might have some opinions on that), but I sure want them.

"You'll just have to bear with me poeple, I'm no Ernest Hemingway!"

Are Poeples devotees of Edgar Allen?
