Posted By: Dave F
Remember guys when a few weeks back I was contemplating either doing a N172 or T3 every once in a blue moon along with my T206's? Well, here is the first T3 I've ever bought. Don't even know for sure if I'll bother getting it graded, I would assume it is a PSA 1 all day long with those water stains. But still hopefully a decent card.

Would love to see a thread of everybody's "last" T3 pickup...I know someone may have a PSA 5 Matty....but if your last pickup was a PSA 1 (MK) Mitchell...than post the Mitchell!

Posted By: Craig D
Your first T3 purchase was a reprint. It's a regular card size, not cabinet card size (5 3/4 X 8), right?

Sorry about that. Turkey Reds are a great set, don't give up. (And get your money back on that one!)

Happy Collecting,
Craig

Posted By: barrysloate
The colors and clarity don't look right but sometimes that's just the scan. But the reprints are very small- are there now reprints out there that are 5 3/4 x 8?

Posted By: Dave F
unfortunately had I seen it stated reprint or even the card size at all, I wouldn't have bought it. My mistake if its a reprint. I assume too much from time to time.

Posted By: Craig D
After having seen (and made) so many scans of T3s, there is just a very distinct difference in appearance between authentic T3s and reprints. On the front, the coloring of the picture and borders is different and if the scan is clear enough, the texture is a giveaway as well. On the back, the text and graphics of a reprint looks too clean and fresh. Also, the reprint backs are white versus the authentic cards which are a cream color. Similar to T206 reprints, they just don't look right in many respects.

There are full-size reprints now, created by Mike Wheat a few years ago. I've never examined one in person, but I know that the back carries a distinctive marking which identifies it as a reprint. I'm confident that it would be easy to idenitify it as a reprint if you held it in your hands. Scans, etc may prove a bit more difficult.

Obviously, if possible, just ask about the size of the card and you'll know right away what you're dealing with.

Happy Collecting,
Craig

Posted By: jay wolt
Craig is dead on as usual w/ his information.
Mike Wheat made a set of full size reprints a
couple of years ago and even incl 2 cards that
weren't in the set Honus Wagner & Joe Jackson.

The card fronts lack the texture of the originals
where as the originals almost have an oil painting
look & luster to them. Problem is ya can't pick that
up via the scans.
On the card reverse Wheat put 2 "sunshine bursts" by
the lower corners. There is NO mention of reprint, or
of Mike Wheat or of the date of the reprints, just the
sun burst. On Wheat's site he chimes in that his cards
are so accurate that they can fool you. I bought a couple
so I can learn the nuances and not buy or bid on a card
too quickly before I checked them out.

Here is a scan of a reprint (on top) and an original.

Posted By: Dave F
Wow, so without a really good scan can be difficult to tell. Does it appear by the way the auction wasn written the seller probably didn't know he had a reprint either?

Posted By: mr. moses
it was well before these things were graded by companies. It is my latest and only remaining example. I bought it as near mint. The colors are crisp. The blemish in the scan of the front is a misdirected particle on the screwdown . I am showing one of two top corners with slightest touches of wear. Guesstimated grade with such a defect? Sure looks nice anyway and made tougher by the fact he is but a common..........

Posted By: Dave F
Craig...
You were right on the money. It is a "mini" standard sized baseball card...so...reprint, but seller has told me that he wasn't aware it was a reprint either...and I do believe him. It doesn't look like he sells a whole lot of pre-war cards.

Posted By: Dylan
and you were so excited, bummer. I kinda figured something was up, because even if its technical grade wasnt high because of a little staining for a T3 to be priced at 100 bucks thesedays there's pinholes or clipped corners or a small tear, etc. These are cheap anymore!

Posted By: Aaron
Just noticed a T9 on ebay with the sunshine bursts in the lower corners. I'm assuming this is one of the reprints. Doesn't seem like anyone has noticed the sunbursts on this card currently....

Posted By: Craig D
VERY good call Aaron. For what it's worth, I emailed the seller. Most bidders must have noticed, since an authentic Johnson in that condition would be worth quite a bit. However, as you noted, several people are being fooled on a $10 reprint.

For the record, I'm still slightly ticked about those reprints being produced. They are beautiful and well done, but are bound to create a great deal of confusion and disappointment for people over the years. I just hope PSA or SGC won't let any slide by.

Posted By: Zach S.
yeah, I bought one of Mike Wheat's T3 reprint Honus Wagner cards just because I liked the look of it. It serves a dual purpose though because having one makes it easier to identify one of his reprints. I know he doesn't try to pawn them off as originals but who knows what someone else will do.

Posted By: Dylan
For every reprint set made you've probably had thousands try and pawn them off on ebay or elsewhere with no disclosure. I hope no one else gets any bright ideas about producing reprint sets. Atleast have the word reprint in bold lettering somewhere. Obviously a subtle marking like the sunshines should work, but not everyone notices such small things.

Posted By: Steve f
After winning but before payout, Post a link/photo here. You can always cancel a bogus purchase. If still uncertain, Use a *credit card when paying with PP and you'll be doublee protected. This practice saved my butt. (*For marital harmony, Make sure you pay it off within 28 days)

Posted By: Dylan
Now when you say credit card, you mean actual credit card, and not a debit card from visa, mastercard, etc right? You get different protection when its purchased with credit then with your checking account?

Posted By: mr. moses
it is a feather that was left on my scanner. And NO; I wasn't making a scan of a chicken . Tx for the response Leon. I guess I wouldn't get it graded without knowing it would be a "7" and even then not sure why I would want to at all. Looks just great in a large screwdown.
