Posted By: steve
My current scanner puts out poor scans (see my domino disc thread insert).
Cards in slabs come out marginal at best, and the slabbed discs/pins/coins are horrible. It is a Cannon CanoScan LiDE 25 model - not good.

I used to have a scanner with my old computer, worked superb, but is not compatible with my new computer.

What is a value minded scanner that is proven to put out nice scans of slabbed cards and the especially tough PSA and PCGS slabbed discs/pns/coins?

Thanks, Steve.

Posted By: DaveW
I have an HP scanner that works really well. It is the 3970, which (of course) isn't made any more. I paid $99 for it at Best Buy about 3 years ago.

I think the current equivalent model is the G3010. It is on sale for $95 ($5 off list). Read about it here:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=pcat17005&type=page&_requestid=39147

Here's an example of a scanned slab. I scanned at 2x at 200 dpi (400 dpi at actual size). I lowered the size to post here. The corner is cut out of the enlarged scan.

Posted By: leon
I am not sure about pins and so forth being scanned, as I mostly do cards, but I just replaced my scanner a few months ago. It's a Microtek 400s flatbed scanner...I paid about $175 for it new....I love it. Whichever one you get make sure it's Hi Speed USB version 2. Unless you have a firewire connector (about the same I think) or a scsi adapter (not likely) then a USB v2 scanner should be your best bet...Others might have different views....Mine works great and I love it....Hope this helps.....

Posted By: Dave Hornish
I have had both HP and Microtek scanners and I like the Microtek better. All of my HP scans strobe to some degree when scanning with the lid slighly open (like with a slab or pin)which is not a problem I have had with Microtek scanners.
