Posted By: JimB
I don't know if it is just me, but the E98 Matty seems like a pretty tough card - tougher than the average E98. Maybe it is just that it is such a cool, unique pose that nobody wants to sell theirs.
JiimB

Posted By: barrysloate
Also, isn't the lettering different than on other E98's?

Posted By: Wesley
If you count each of the different six colors for the E98s as a separate issues, then each E98 color would be scarcer than the E103.

Posted By: Dylan
Generally speaking doesn't the E93 set sell for a little more then E98? I dont really know which one is tougher then the other, maybe the pop reports shed a little light on this. I do think the E93's are a little more attractive then E98 though.
In regards to the Mathewson, its E98 version shows him in a unique pose, and the font (for some strange reason) is different then all the other cards in the set. Between the two i'd take the E98 Mathewson since the E93 pose is the same as his T206 dark cap.

Posted By: quan
i'd guess the e98s are 3 times as scarce as the e93s, even with all the colors. mathewson is a great pose with his big belt buckle. i'm less enthused about his e95 and e103 poses.

Posted By: Zach Rice
The image of Mathewson on his E98 card is not unique. The E98 image is just a cropped version of his E125 American Caramel card.

Posted By: Richard
There are only 3 E125 Mathewsons known to exist.

I think that would put it at the top of the list of most difficult caramel by a long mile.

Posted By: Joe D.
Jim,

awesome stuff.

but that e103 is just plain ugly. If you twist my arm, I would take it off your hands for you.

I don't mean to hijack here.... but would E107 and e105 go on top of this list (tougher than the ones mentioned).... and the e92 (my favorite pose) go to the bottom?

We might as well rank the rest of the e-Matty's!!

oh... 1914 Cracker Jack up there too.

and again Jim... you need to rid yourself of that ugly red card.
Posted By: wesleyliu
With only a handful of each in existence, the E125, along with the E107, are in a different league.

With respect to the other caramel cards, I would rank them as follows:

E105 (toughest)
1914 CJ
E103
E98
E92
E95
E93

Posted By: Wesley
From what I have seen, the E106 might be tougher than the E103.

Also, if you break down the E92 and look at the specific backs, the Crofts Candy and Crofts Cocoa should are quite tough as well.

Posted By: Brett
e98 Mathewson is my favourite caramel card. These are my only caramels of him, although I have a t206 portrait and a ripped t205. I just need a red and green background e98 to have all 4 !! Can anyone help me out

Posted By: Richard
e106 is indeed tough. I would put it in the second grouping with e103s as well.

Posted By: Zach Rice
Though E125 and E107 are nearly impossible to obtain, I would think Mathewson's E224-2 is his toughest card.

Posted By: Dylan
Wow that E98 graded by GAI is missing a pretty good chunk! Percentage wise how much of a card has to be present to be slabbed authentic?

Posted By: Josh Wulkan
Richard,

we had an E125 Matty in our last auction:

http://march07.hugginsandscott.com/cgi-bin/showitem.pl?itemid=4145

I don't know if you were counting that as one of the three known to exist. It did not have the tabs at the bottom, but still sold for $3737.50 (w/the vig).

Also, coming up in our next auction, we have a nice E106 Matty (PSA 4):

http://www.hugginsandscott.com/cgi-bin/showitem.pl?itemid=5466

Hope this helps.

Josh

Posted By: Brett
I didn't know that red e98 Mattys were so tough

Yeah the blue one is in pretty rough shape. Its my favourite caramel card and I never see them for sale in bad shape, so I won that on ebay too. I also managed to pick up the orange one pretty cheap on ebay because of the poor scans the seller provided. I asked for a closer scan of the front and he said that his "scanner doesn't work that way" lol. I took a chance and it paid off luckily. The lines in the picture are from the crappy scanner. I'd rather have a red background over the green just because it looks better, not because of its value ! Although if I could find a green one, then i'd try to pick it up
