Posted By: Joe Drouillard
Hello Everyone,

I have a question about sending the T206 card shown below to PSA for a grade. Would it be best to send it in as is, or should I risk damaging the card and attempt to crack the CSA holder open first?

I bought the card (not the holder)on eBay for about thirty bucks. The measurements are good (1-7/16 X 2-5/8) and I don't see evidence of trimming. If it drops to a 4, okay, but I hope it will cross over as a 5.

Thanks for any advice,

Joe

Posted By: Dave F
A CSA holder...I'd crack it. You only got $30 bucks in it anyway. If it was in a SGC holder and you paid the actual going rates for a 5, I'd say don't crack out.

Posted By: Jason L
but why wouldn't PSA grade something that is in a CSA holder?
Why does the holder make any difference?
(obviously, I know nothing of CSA)
thanks,
Jason

edited to clarify meaning

Posted By: Joe Drouillard
Thanks everyone for the advice. I will break out the hammer and screwdriver.

Any ideas what the card would grade? I know the photo is a little fuzzy, but there are no wrinkles, creases or visible imperfections on the card.

Thanks,

Joe

Posted By: Dave S
...as to how many on here have ever themselves had a problem with CSA? Seems they take a lot of unfair (that's why I asked the question) bashing and too often get lumped with PRO. I have personally cracked 4 CSA cards and SGC graded every one of them fairly comparably. Would love to hear some replies from those who've had a problem...

Posted By: Fred C
Strong 4
Ave./weak 5

You have to figure if you get an SGC50 or 60 then you've done well. Who knows, maybe the grading gods will be generous that day and provide you with a 70....

Posted By: boxingcardman
One (1953 Spahn) came back evidence of alterations by PSA, and I agreed. From a CSA 7 down to garbage. The others crossed over a grade lower (T206 Waddell) with SGC, and the last one came back same grade (1954 Topps Williams) from PSA. It's been years since I did this, however--I got the cards from Teletrade, which gives you some idea of how long ago...

FWIW, I do not believe you can ever get a truly unbiased opinion from any grading service on someone else's holdered card.

Posted By: George Dreher
If you send it in the CSA holder, PSA probably won't even bother to try and grade it. PSA is finicky and biased toward ASA and CSA. I believe PSA graders lurk here also, so it might not get graded anyway if the person handling your submission reads this thread.
That said, your card should grade PSA 5.

Dave, every card I ever sent PSA from ASA and CSA graded favorably, but I always busted them out of the slabs before sending.

Posted By: Dylan
I would never buy a card in a pro holder since its where all the trim jobs go, but im amazed to see people pay relatively large amounts for cards with pro high grades on ebay. Unfrickenbelievable. As for CSA, i know next to nothing about them, but they seem to be better then a lot of the trash companies out there grading cards.

Posted By: Ryan
I have crossed 2 CSA slabbed cards over to SGC...Nolan Ryan and Tom Fears Rookies...both were CSA 7 and both came back SGC 80's.

Posted By: Steve M.
When you "crossed" them over were they in the CSA slab or had you cracked them out?

Posted By: Dave S
I will say that CSA is the 2nd easiest slab to crack based on my experience. Easiest being..just recently learned..CTA. My opinion only, but both a piece of cake compared to SGC and PSA..

Posted By: Joe Drouillard
Hello Everyone,

Your right! The CSA holder cracked as easy as an egg on the edge of a glass bowl. Pfeffer is now free and the best looking T in my collection. I think I'll admire it for a while before I submit it for a grade.

Thanks for all of the advice.

Best wishes,

Joe
