Posted By: Brett
I don't know why people even follow the population reports because so many people crack the card out of the case and send them in to get graded again. it kind if screws up the numbers

Posted By: Matthew
What kind of special is $280 for 10 T3 submissions? You've got to be kidding. Do you know how much old cardboard I can get for that kind of dough?

Posted By: boxingcardman
Don't know if you were on the scene when PSA first made real waves, but the difference between 8 cards and nm-mt raw cards was so large that it made the grading fees worthwhile even at the then-lower values. You could afford to submit 20 potential 8s when the price you could get on a couple of them could cover all the grading fees and then some. I see the same dynamic at work here (at least with the boxers in the set). Slabbed examples of these cards are selling for much more than their raw counterparts. I'd happily spend $28 a card to add more than that in sales price to it.

Posted By: Jason L
but to see these pop reports and all the criticism they get...it's such a damn shame that the companies aren't (can't be) more vigilant about ensuring a high level of integrity for these lists.

If these were thought to be 90% accurate, just think how much value that would add to the hobby! True knowledge on rarity/scarcity issues would dictate pricing environment that everyone would have more confidence in...to the extent that the graded pop reflects the total pop, of course, etc etc etc...
ugh...such a shame!

Posted By: Mike
No one can stop folks from cracking them out and resubmiting them. But one of the things that used to bother me, was that after getting a card graded from PSA, and having it returned, it would never show up on the report. As an example, I had a card returned to me graded a 5. (A 207) A year or so later, it still showed as never having a grade 5 issued for that card. Pop report showed 0 in a five for that card. This has happened three times as I recall. A well known dealer for them, took my three cards, and had it corrected. With the thought thta if and when I ever sell them, an intelligent buyer may wonder why PSA never graded this card a 5, and here one shows up ? I haven't had this happen lately. maybe they are better organized these days.

Posted By: Joe D.
they can only be a guide.

and really it is not the grading company's fault at all.

I have cracked out PSA slabs and have never handed in a tag.
I know many others have as well.

I know people crack out and resubmit to the same grading company when they think a card is undegraded.

How can PSA or SGC keep an accurate list with all of the cracking out - crossovers / and resubmitting?

Posted By: Jason L
oh yes, I know.,..I wasn't laying blame to the grading companies, or at least, I didn't mean to. Mine was just an expression of general dispair. I have no idea what the answer is, or if there even is one...but I was just daydreaming about how wonderful it would be if it were possible to ensure the integrity level of these pop reports.

because as much as I enjoy the cards for what they are, regardless of raw, graded, condition, age, etc...there is a part of me that would like to be MORE sure of a card's true rarity/scarcity (or population) as I spend increasingly more on them!

Certainly the companies are to blame if they don't populate their own reports with their own work, as a previous post mentions, but you're exactly right, there is no controlling the customer behavior...cracking and re-submitting, etc...

But just hypothetically, wouldn't it be cool to know exactly how many T200 Chicago Nationals cards have been graded, and what ALL those grades were?...

ah yes, the never-ending quest for absolute knowledge!!!

Posted By: Joe D.
they can offer $1 for every tag returned.

That would help.

I think people would send them in if they were given a reason to do so.

Of course, that would only help the situation going forward.

edit to say: Thanks for the T200 Reference. Love those cards!

I have a tax bill and too many sub-collections demanding my resources, I'm afraid.

But if you ever upgrade that one, you know where to find me!!!

PS-great point regarding the need for financial incentive. If they could clean up those lists, they could charge premiums separately for access, offer rewards for returned flips, and rewards for confessions of cracking and resubmissions....and then it would feed on itself in a virtuous cycle!!!
But you're right, it takes $$$ to instigate action!

Edited to add:
2 things I love about the Cubs T200:
1) Miller in the upper right looks as though the photo is a huge pain in the ass and can't wait to go
2) Is it me, or does Heinie Zimmermann look like an absolute monster of a man, seated in the center?!!?? looks huge compared to the rest...

http://www.freewebs.com/chisywact/

Posted By: peter ullman
you'd think the major grading companies would be communicative enough...with each other...to apprise the other grading company if/when they broke a card out of one of their holders. This would be the ideal way to keep track of resubmissions...don't ya think? Then the pop report can be ammended. Not a huge effort?

pete ullman

Posted By: Joe D.
It is my understanding that the grading companies do return flips to each other.
At least I did hear SGC say they return flips to PSA on crossovers.

But, they have no control over people cracking them out themselves before crossing over or resubmitting.

In an earlier thread... someone posted an image of what looked like hundreds of flips from private crack-outs.

I would suspect... but don't know for sure - people crack out themselves more often than sending a slab in for regrade/crossover.
Posted By: Jason L
change the $ numbers to whatever works, but the Pop reports should be sold separately:

1) Grading company charges $100 annual subscription for access to their pop report.
2) For that $100, the customer gets pop report data, and a 20%-per-card discount on grading for every flip that he turns in (doesn't matter what company it was from).

I would think that if all the grading companies did this, the returned flip information could all be shared, entered into the appropriate databases, and used to achieve greater pop report accuracy.

This incentivizes the companies to provide a better service(more recurring subscription revenue), and the customers to contribute (grading discounts) and fess up to their private cracking.

Attention Grading companies: Look at it this way too...this type of program would provide an even greater, more detailed look into the behavior of your customers and allow you to better customize & target your offerings, mailings, etc...

There is ALOT more info to be had for everyone with this sort of program.
With info, comes the $$$
probably in ways that we don't even see yet!!!

Posted By: Matthew
I will have to agree if I had a NM Turkey Red I would grade it before selling. I do not think a common graded T3 in VG or less is going to make up the $28 cost to grade it. My T3s would be VG to VGEX at best, so a T3 sized toploader works much better for me & also allows me to pick up more cards. More cards is better than more plastic anyday.
