Posted By: barrysloate
Just a reminder that my current telephone auction closes tomorrow night, March 29, at 6:00 PM for qualifying bids. There are still many good values with two bidding days to go, and I urge all to check out my website and click on the "price update" link at the bottom of the home page.

For all those participating at the end tomorrow I urge that you place your bids via telephone. We will be monitoring emails but you will be at a distinct advantage by calling. Thanks to all who have participated so far.

Regards, Barry

Posted By: barrysloate
CORRECTION ON AUCTION LOT #63

Last night I received a bid of $1092 on lot #63, the 1914 Cracker Jack Eddie Plank. Today the bidder called me and said he placed the bid in error. While I do not generally allow a bid retraction, I have decided to allow him in this case to retract.

So the current bid on lot #64 is $993. I apologize if this inconvenienced anyone in any way. Thank you.

Some of the prices were great, but for those who did their homework there were some good deals too.

Harry- both the Old Judge and N28 were issued in 1887...not sure which was first. Fair point.

James- not trying to be antagonistic, but that Sparky character just sounded like one of the barnacles of life, someone who is just bitter and frustrated and takes it out on others. What part did you find compelling? Since you posted your name, happy to field any questions

Posted By: Mark
I believe Hal Lewis proved that n28s were issued in 1888. Your n28 John Clarkson card is good proof of that since it pictures Clarkson in a Boston uniform and Clarkson played for Chicago for the entire 1887 season. And Harry's correct that there is an 1887 n172 Clarkson depicting him on the White Sox.

Posted By: James Feagin
Barry--I respect your option to run your auction in any way you please. In this era of fast-paced technology, and even more impatient people, I can imagine that bidders not having instant access to information or communication must be frustrating to them. The days of the phone bid seem archaic, even though it is nostalgic to so many. Your prices realized are steller, however, I personally prefer to deal with online auction houses with the 30 minute rule on each lot. That way I know how I stand on each time, how much time is left, and I can budget as such. Just my thought and I'm glad you're happy with how it went.

James

Posted By: Cat
Congrats Barry!!! Those prices are amazing. Somehow your format must appeal to the high-end (wealthy) collector. I actually appreciate different auction formats. My feelings are that if a bidder wants to know where an item is at...call him. He's the one that has to exert the manpower to answer the phone. The phone call costs me about as much time as clicking around on the internet.

Barry, I hope you decide to have auctions on a more regular basis. Quarterly??

Posted By: James Feagin
Absolutely. However, the internet does provide more flexibility and those problems we encountered that night have been fixed. Every form of communication medium has those problems. I just feel the only way phone auctions can provide what most customers are looking for is if there is a call back service. In no way am I impuning Barry's auction, it's just my opinion.

James

Posted By: James Feagin
Hardly checkmate John. Our customers and consignors were almost universally satisfied with how we handled ourselves during that time. Jerry was trying to be snappy where a problem existed for less than a day. Sparky remarked that phone systems are archaic and don't allow for instant communication. He also mentioned that Lew Lipset even runs an internet auction. While his tone was nasty, the point was taken. I personally think Barry is a credit to the hobby, and how he wants to run his auctions are fine by me. From my own collecting viewpoint though, telephone auctions just don't allow me the flexibility.

Posted By: Dan Bretta
If you are fine with how Barry runs his auctions then why even mention it James? When someone from another auction house mentions that another's auction is "archaic" on a message board it's going to come off sounding a little arrogant.

Posted By: James Feagin
Good point Dan. Perhaps I should differentiate when I'm speaking as a collector and when I'm speaking as an auction house employee. I was speaking as a collector. However, in the future I will avoid ALL topics about other auction houses. Thanks and hopefully there is no harm no foul with Barry. I was speaking 100% as a collector. Those who know me, hopefully would vouch that I'm not arrogant as I seemingly sound.

Posted By: barrysloate
James- the difference between your post and Sparky's is that you responded intelligently and put your name to it, while that other slugabed posted anonymously and was just plain nasty (and too cowardly to reveal his name).

I am a bit of a technophobe and don't know how comfortable I would be relying on a system I really wouldn't understand. And I would dread a final night crash. I sell alot on ebay and like that format, but for my catalogs I will stick with what I have. While the last night does have its level of stress, I do enjoy speaking with many people who I only get to talk to during the auction. And more than half the bids are emailed to me anyway, so I get a little bit of both worlds.

And it is true that the N28 is an 1888 issue, and thus N172 is the true rookie card. My error, and I wish someone caught it earler as I would have posted a correction.

Posted By: Joe Drouillard
I participated for the first time yesterday on Barry's online auction and was very impressed with Barry's professionalism. First I screwed up the phone number, then I messed up on the registration rules, and called just two hours before the auction ended. Nevertheless, Barry, or whoever took care of my bid, treated me with respect and dignity. They probably spent more time on me than my bid was worth. I was only bidding on one of the lower priced cards in the auction, but he made me feel like I was bidding on the featured item. I will be back.

Best wishes Barry you're a class act.

Joe

Posted By: Jeff Lichtman
More significant than the fact that Barry used the word "slugabed" (which is actually a word that predated the Simpsons) is the fact that Barry was "reading [his] Simpsons book." I will let that admission stand on its own merit.

As for Barry's auctions, yes, they are archaic in this online era. But, the one thing about Barry's auctions that I know in my heart to be 100% true and I cannot say this about a single other auction house is that I will not be a victim of shill bidding. I just don't have the same comfort level with any other place, no offense. We should all only hope that Barry's auctions proliferate.

But Eric Burden has no voice left and was embarrassing, and he used to be among the best. Some people age better than others.

Edited to say thanks Jeff, I do treat customers' ceiling bids with tremendous respect. If they feel comfortable enough leaving them with me I know I have a big responsibility not to let them down.

I agree, it was just awful.

As a side note, Dave Van Ronk and Bob Dylan did very respectable versions of "House of the Rising Sun" in the early sixties. But after the Animals did their version in 1964, I don't think anyone ever attempted the song again. It was so good that it became almost a sacred cow.

But what I do find interesting is a high percentage of lots are won by new bidders, much more so than old ones. I guess many of them have dropped out of the hobby.

Edited to add I don't know how many new registrants found me from Net54. Many do, some find out in other ways. One woman googled "Duke Kahanamoku" and because I had one of his cards found the whole auction and won the card.

Posted By: Jeff Lichtman
The old SCTV was perhaps the funniest stuff I have ever seen on television. I always felt that Ramis was the funniest of the bunch, even funnier than Candy or Flaherty. I wasn't as into Dave Thomas and when he teamed with Rick Moranis on that Candadian BS I felt that SCTV had jumped the shark.

Posted By: barrysloate
SCTV was equal to or better than SNL when it debuted in 1977. Unfortunately, Harold Ramis only stayed on for the first season. Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin and Catherine O'Hara were terrific too. It was a legendary comedy troupe that is somewhat forgotten today.

Moranis and Thomas did the "Great White North" and played those two hosers from Canada. It was funny once or twice but it had nowhere to go. Martin Short also came on later, and while he was very funny the show did lose steam after a few seasons. They all do.

And, also recorded spots on smaller stations.

However, after this movie was out, about in the Summer of '73....Wolfman Jack became even more popular
to a nationwide audience. And, he was all over the airwaves and on TV.

I'm relating my listening experience back then. Others may chime in and provide a better answer to your "Q".

PS.....
One of my smarter acquistions, was buying my 1957 Thunderbird in the Fall of '72. Posted By: barrysloate
I knew Wolfman Jack when I was a teenager. He was far from unknown. This film made some people more famous, but they were already known. Ron Howard left show business after the Andy Griffith show ended in 1968, so this was his first appearance in five years. It got his career back on track, and led to "Happy Days", but he was already a famous child actor.

It is amazing how many of the 60's rockers still have good voices but some have so deteriorated it is painful to listen to, at least to me. Gerry of Gerry and the Pacemakers' voice was really pitiful also. On the flip side, the recent Do-Wop PBS special had a lot of old groups from the 50's and 60's and their voices sounded amazingly good. Truly amazing to see these 65-75 year old Black men with such fantastic singing voices still...
