Posted By: barrysloate
I can't scan, but my favorite set is N142, with the Robinson and Delahanty my two favorites. Actually, the Robinson is a little more colorful, so I'll pick that as my number one.

Posted By: Joann
I have a handful of cards that rise above the others as far as which I really really like (33 Goudey Ruth, N172 Ganzel, E97's, N28 Annie Oakley, etc).

But I define favorite as follows (and note that value and replaceability have no role in this definition):

If I had to give up all cards but one, never to buy another, never to see another, and I could keep only one that I could never sell but just enjoy owning, showing off, explaining, displaying, or even just looking at, which would it be?

By this definition, here is my favorite:

Actual size is about 4x6.

Joann

Posted By: Bruce Babcock

Hard to pick just one. Many of my favs are mentioned above. Leon's Four Base Hits would be my ultimate all-time fav. If I limit myself to cards I own, it would be this one.

In answer to Jeff's question;

This is one of the 1899 Chickering Studio imperial cabinets (9" x 10") of the Boston Beaneaters. There are both black and gray mount versions with either silver or gold leaf. Blank backed. The SCD 2007 catalog lists 13 subjects including Duffy, Hamilton, Lowe, Nichols & Jimmy Collins. It's possible that more subjects may be discovered. The size and photo quality make them pretty special. Lew Lipset auctioned off a group of about 12 a couple of years ago, which is where I got this example.

Chickering also produced cabinets in 1900 although they were smaller (4.24" x 6.5") and had ad backs. SCD 2007 lists only two subjects, Win Mercer & Kid Nichols.

I make no claim to ownership of the D359 Bender.

...I just went through and read the rest of the thread and see that Leon, in a later post, stated to post cards of personal ownership. I dont always read the dozens of threads everyone posts before posting myself, esp. on "monthly pickup" threads or simaler threads like this. Take a chill pill bro, I like the card, thats all.

I got in a bit of a discussion [argument] with a board member that the Pete Hill card was owned by another board member "who does not post a great deal" but didn't want to out you personally since I couldn't remember if you had shared that card with me privately or on the board (kind of thought privately but my memory is so crappy and I wanted to error on the side of caution and privacy).

Very important card in my view too.

Posted By: E, Daniel
After getting married we weren't exactly flush - but nonetheless I had worked hard to find a quality diamond for my precious gal's finger....So around a year later I was breathing heavy over a scan of this card while perched at my desktop, wistful but not wishful. She walked up behind me, sensed my greater than usual interest, asked if it was a card I really wanted, and responded to my starting protestations (somewhat half-hearted ): "It can be YOUR diamond ring".
I'll love her forever for being such a generous soul.

Daniel

Ps. This is a real beater but most of the red surrounding Mel Ott and the bat is intact. Also, all the printing is legible on the back of the card.

I'm a real Giants fan and this was my first '33 Goudey. It would be a waste of time and money to get PSA to grade this card. It would be the first PSA card to grade .5 lol.

Peter

From the Goudey set I think the purple background Charlie Gehringer card is one of the prettiest; cmoking posted an image of it earlier. From the T206's, one of my favorites is the Ed Walsh portrait. Not really sure why, it just seems to capture the essence of the period and the card set:

Posted By: Kevin Saucier
<"That Olympic & Titanic card is gorgeous. Total color from edge to edge. Is everything in that set the same way? And are they expensive?">
It looks even better in person. It's the only trade card that shows the Titanic "before" it sunk and is a regular issue set of one.

Some would argue that they are not rare but I only found a dozen last year on ebay and only two so far this year. Beaters (grade level 1 or 2), which are almost all of them, sell from around $40 - $150 raw. So far it hasn't really hit our hobby yet...but it's very poular with Titanic collectors who often consider rounded corners with no paper loss or creases as high grade.

The SGC 5.5 above, is "by far" the best I have seen and has an insured appraisal value of $8,000. It will soon be on the way to the Branson, MO Titanic museum.

Kevin

Posted By: Joann
Kevin,

Thanks much for the response. What ebay category would it be in?

I think the card is just mezmerizing. It's so different from what I am used to seeing, and I love that it is so colorful but still subtle, and with no borders.

Very, very nice card. Good for you for being able to own such a nice example. What a thrill that must be.

Joann

Edited to remove questions about other cards in the set, as I just reread Kevin's post.

Posted By: Kevin Saucier
The card really is stunning.

It has everything a collector is looking for; scarcity, value, mystique, attractiveness, tragedy, fame in addition to having a well documented and known subject matter. Titanic is so famous, the name is used to define an era in time.

Unfortunately it’s a British card which is probably why it hasn’t hit it big in our hobby or have catastrophic value.

I’ve always thought that this card has the potential to be "The Card" of non-sports...in other words, have higher profile than Horrors of War Hitler.

The movie reference / pic above is hilarious!
__________________________________________________ ___________

Here is my favorite baseball card:
