Posted By: Kenneth A. Cohen
This listing intrigues me. It stinks to high heaven (all the tell-tale signs: I'm not a card grader, bought at estate sale, no paypal, etc.). However, I can't see anything "wrong" with the card. It just looks too good to be true given the other aspects of the listing.

What am I missing? Would be grateful for the collective knowledge of Net54 on this one. Thanks

http://cgi.ebay.com/1909-T206-Sweet-Caporal-Walter-Johnson-hands-at-chest_W0QQitemZ260082253196QQihZ016QQcategoryZ8684 0QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Posted By: Dave
I was watching it. Might have taken a chance at a lower price..but for $400 plus I didn't think it would get above a PSA 2 to begin with...with the crease mentioned and the scuffing markes or whatever

Posted By: Dave
Just from looking at the scan it looks like a genuine card. There is an odd tint to the picture though which could be accidental or purposefully done to obscure the true color of the card. It looks genuine as far as the type set goes, but the right side border looks a little funny to me. Normally I would say that a seller with over 800 feedback could be trusted, but no longer since I have busted guys this year with 3000+ feedback shilling their auctions by having relatives and friends bid on theor items. One guy even had an arrangement with another card/comic shop owner in his town where they would bid up each others items on Ebay when asked to do so.

Posted By: Kenneth A. Cohen
Did you see the '34 Gehrig from the same guy? Now THAT looks like a P.T. Barnum special if I ever saw one. Yet so many people bidding it up.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260082263169

Posted By: Bill K
I agree that it looks suspicious, but tempting based on the card. I wouldn't be worried that the card is real, but that you'll ever see it. I remember someone from the board took a chance on a REAL nice looking t206 Keeler batting on Ebay a few years back and it came back a PSA9 after it was sent in for grading.

It might be worth the gamble for someone with a bigger card budget than me.

Bill

My personal collection - http://s47.photobucket.com/albums/f176/fkm_bky/

Posted By: Dave
Bill....did you think based on that picture and description that the Johnson would grade higher than a 2 or SGC 30? assuming its real...

Posted By: Bill K
Just based on the picture three corners looked real sharp with the lower left (I think) with a minor ding in it. If there isn't any paper loss I would think it has a shot at a 5 or 6....but then again, wtf do I know?

Bill

My personal collection - http://s47.photobucket.com/albums/f176/fkm_bky/

Posted By: Dave
Ha Ha...I ask myself that daily

Edited to say..if that thing would grade out a 5 or 6, then I'll be kicking myself for not spending that on it...I've just been through way too many submissions to ever be that positive

Posted By: Judge Dred (Fred)
Who ever wins this auction is going to get what they deserve. No returns, etc. Flea market, locker sales, estate sales... RUN, DON'T WALK from this auction. If the final sale price was very minimal you might want to take a chance. Does anyone really need the kind of frustration and aggravation that you'd get from receiving reprints? If a seller can't/wont back up his material then why take a chance.

Posted By: David Smith
Ask yourself this question; If the seller has all the RED FLAGS plus their feedback rating is 98.8 AND they know about grading companies, then WHY wouldn't they have it or the Gehrig, Ruth or the other card (1938 Goudey Williams?) graded?

I can hear the excuses now, just like the guys in Cincinnati with the fake T206 Wagner card-- "I don't want to let the cards out of my hand", "I don't trust other people", "It takes too much time to get the cards graded" and "It costs too much to have cards like these graded".

David

Posted By: Kenneth A. Cohen
I suppose what struck me was the contrast between the two auctions. The Gehrig being so blatantly fake that even I could tell - and the the T206 Johnson that looked (at least to me) to be authentic.

Posted By: David Smith
Kenneth,

Maybe he put one real card in the mix (Johnson) to throw suspicion off the other cards?? The four cards sold for a little over $3,000, so if he lost a little money on a real card (which I doubt) then he MORE than made up for it with the fakes.

David
