Posted By: Judson Hamlin
In the recent thread on T206 backstamps, a couple of different stamps of agents of the Saturday Evening Post turned up, all (so far) on 150 series cards. While the numbers don't yet add up to a clear marketing campaign or distribution scheme, it does raise the possibility that the SEP might have involved themselves in the distribution of T206s stamped with their agents' contact information. Some possibilities include, but are not limited to; 1) some sort of redemption deal for after-market cards by the agents; 2) the purchase of cards by the SEP from Amer. Lithographic towards the end of the 150 run, thus avoiding the expense of having a new set printed for the SEP, yet still getting their "product" into the market; 3) a cross-marketing effort by SEP agents who were also selling tobacco products or; 4) something else entirely.
If any other collectors have agents' stamps, that would show a broader scope of Saturday Even. Post involvement, rather than just Rochester, NY and Milton, DE (which is what we (collectively) have so far). Also, I would welcome any alternate theories about how and why these stamps came to be on the T206s.
