Posted By: Jim
I need some help. I just found a place where an "absentee card dealer" has some Diamond Stars for sale. Condition seems to be about g-vg on average. Prices range from $15-20 for a few, $30 on average for most with Kiki Cuyler($50) and Al Lopez ($250) being the best players.

What should average prices be? What cards are more important in the set?

HELP!!

Posted By: Mike
Sounds like a pretty fair price for the commons and the Cuyler, but I'd make sure that the Lopez was in really nice shape before I spent $250 on it. Just my 2 cents...
Mike

Posted By: Frank Wakefield
I agree... $15 to $20 sounds good... I'd like a few. Up towards $30 each I'd not want so many... and $250 sounds like too much. I'm frugal and live in the past when it come to pricing, so what you have may well be a good opportunity to get several all at once. Much better than buying them one at a time on eBay and spending enough on shipping to have bought half a dozen more cards.

I like Diamond Stars... it is somewhat overlooked. Goudey dominates that time in baseball.

Frank.

Posted By: Jim
The Shipp card was $15 and the Berger was $20. I think the Shipp was about G and the Berger maybe G-VG. The Cuyler was about G, give or take. I may go back and grab those 2 or 3. There were a few spots in the case open where it looks like someone beat me to the punch on some.

Posted By: Kenneth A. Cohen
If the Lopez card is the high number version #97, the price is more in line. If he's asking $250, I would assume it is. If however it is G/VG, seems pretty steep to me. Just my opinion.
Ken

Posted By: Anonymous
I've been building this set in PSA 5 and am about 12% complete. On average, I pay $20-$25 for a common in PSA 5 (not including shipping).

This is for commons that are numbered 97 or less. 97-108 are very hard to come by.

In my humble opinion...

I think $50 is too much for a Kuyler that isn't in at least EX condition. I also wouldn't spend that much on the Lopez. You can get that one on Ebay for $75 or less in PSA 5+ (most days). Unless of course it's #97. If so, $250 is a decent price for a strong VG card.

The most important cards differ from collector to collector. It depends on if you're building the Master Set or just Basic set. This set has a few front variations, back colors and copyright dates, etc. Top three accoridng to Beckett value are #1 Lefty Grove, #103 Bill Dickey, and #54 Hank "Greenburg". Other key cards are Pie Traynor, Rogers Hornsby, Hank "Greenberg", and Jimmie Foxx to name a few. Also, like I said before, cards numbered 97-108 are tough to come by and are also considered high-value key cards.

-Ray

Posted By: Jim
From the list of cards 97-108, I know that they have the following:

97 Al Lopez (I believe it is this oen and not the other)
98 Schoolboy Rowe
102 Van Mungo
108 Walter Berger

If these cards are G-VG, would $30 per card or so be out of line with the scarcity level?

I didnt get a close look at every card but they look to be all G-VG. From what I'm seeing on the net, I think that these prices are very high.

8 Joe Vosmik $30
10 Roy Mahaffey $60
12 Dixie Walker $45
19 Van Mungo $95
22 Jimmy Wilson $20
25 Walter Berger $20
28 Al Lopez $250
31 Kiki Cuyler $50
33 Schoolboy Rowe $40
40 Blondy Ryan $25
42 Jimmy Dykes $30
45 Jo Jo White $30
46 Red Lucas $30
47 Cliff Bolton $20
53 Oscar Melillo $25
57 Cy Blanton $20
66 Ducky Medwick $55
82 John Babich $50
85 Julius Solters $35 and 40 (2 cards)
87 Steve O'Neill $45
89 Joe Stripp $15
91 Bucky Harris $75
93 Alvin Crowder $75
96 Lew Riggs $75
97 Al Lopez
98 Schoolboy Rowe
102 Van Mungo
106 Red Lucas
108 Walter Berger

The Mungo, Berger, Lopez, Lucas and Rowe are listed twice because I dont know which ones they were.
Posted By: Al C.risafulli
The high numbers from this set are VERY tough in any grade, and if you can get them at $30 each, get them. I got to 40% on this set (among the most beautiful prewar cards, IMO) and only had one high #. Eventually I sold off most of the cards, but really regret doing so because it's such a beautiful set.

The low numbers are also a challenge.

Lopez may be a third-tier HOFer, but the scarcity of the high # card makes this a pretty tough one.

As others have said, mid-series commons can be had pretty cheap. But if you're interested in building a beautiful prewar set, the lack of a Ruth and Gehrig makes this set a very affordable option, even in mid and higher grades.

-Al
