I think I have other cards with some stamps on them, T205s 7s, 12s... but I had my T206s out, sorting and counting, and these cards had these stamps on them. Emery's stamps are on 3 Sovereign cards, which I thought a bit unusual. Maybe the guy smoked Sovereigns. Anyone think about collection rates... a pack a day smoker would have a pile of cards, if he was saving them. And need we wonder about how none of the original collectors lived into really old age... Maybe if they issued cards with orange juice packets we'd have some healthy kids. So please scan some of those backs, let's see if we have some stamps in common! Frank. Posted By: Ed McCollumI just found it very interesting that spaced 15 years apart, I found two cards owned by the same guy almost a century ago. One card I got from a dealer in PA, the other off eBay last year in Texas. Mine have the same stamp, but a little easier to read. No real connection. I just check on eBay for more of his backstamps and thought it made a nice/strange subset of cards in my collection. Old post about this. Posted By: KeithI don't have any prewar with collectors names stamped on back, but I do have a t206 Alperman with Alperman 2b stamped on back. I always thought that this was strange. Was this just an obsessive collector that wanted to include the position on the back, or maybe a stamp use by the printing company to designate a stack of cards as Alpermans? If you want this one, see if you can find a Spade portrait replacement for me and we'll haggle. Frank.

Is there anything to support a tie-in to the magazine, such as a distribution deal or (admittedly a reach) could these even be considered a formal overprint? Option (c) is just that these two guys were collectors independent of each other and used their work stamps to mark their cards. edited to note 150 series

Posted By: Frank WakefieldDave, I don't think the stamps on the back are dealer marks for approvals... I think they were ownership marks or advertising marks. Wonder who was the first dealer... One of my cards had a date stamp, month date and year of 1910. I don't think there would have been dealers then. I do think collectors would have marked their own cards then. Maybe Judson has something... Maybe the Saturday Evening Post got a bunch of cards as part of a deal for advertising the various brands. Once the cards reached the magazine folks they could pass them on down to their agents. Or, maybe the agents got cards from cigarette vendors (maybe the vendors could get the cards in bulk) and after getting the cards, stamped them and gave them to newsstand folks to distribute as a way of selling a magazine. Maybe the agents we're seeing had newsstands and they sold both cigarettes and magazines themselves... It is interesting to see that there are multiples of the same agents. I saw a stamped initial on one of my cards. Either a cat or a little bear on another. And I think I might have that dude with the umbrella on one. Come on, T206 collectors, look at those backs and scan some for us. Or are you ashamed that you have less than perfect cards.

You know, "for 25 cards we will give you a free pouch of Cullivan's Fireside" type of thing? Well, not Cullivan's but you know what I mean..........and the cards would be cancelled so as not to be used twice.

I’m not sure if it was the name of a business, or dealer/collector stamp. Not to get off subject, but does anyone believe that the “Toy Town” stamp could have been used by a collector instead of a stamp with his name on it, or was stamping a card part of the Toy Town game? Some of the stories are interesting. I’m considering starting to stamp my collection too. GO BEARS !!!!

Posted By: AnonymousA very quick google search for the mag shows that a new publisher or editor by the name of Lorimer took over in 1908 and was able to double distribution in 5 years to 2 million copies/issue. Might this tie in with an aggressive marketing campaign by their agents to get the magazine into new hands by giving out free t206s? Interesting idea, that needs much more research. Any other SEP agent stamps out there?

This January I had a real interesting occurance when I purchased a collection in Arizona and one in Ohio - where each collector had a "Russell W Sewall"(blue stamp) on the back of a card. (One was a T206 card and the other an Obak card). Small world I guess....
